إِذاif ماemphatic particle اِنتَسَبتَyou traced your lineage إِلىto آدَمٍAdam
إِذا ما اِنتَسَبتَ إِلى آدَمٍ
فَلَمso not يَكُbe بينَكُماbetween you two مِنany أَبِfather
فَلَم يَكُ بينَكُما مِن أَبِ
If you traced your lineage back to Adam,
If you trace your lineage to Adam,
with no father at all between the two of you,
with no father between you and him,
وَجازَتand passed beyond سِنُوكَyour years بِكَwith you الأَربعينforty
وَجازَت سِنُوكَ بِكَ الأَربعين
وَصِرتَand you came إِلىto الجانِبِthe side الأَجنَبِthe farther
وَصِرتَ إِلى الجانِبِ الأَجنَبِ
and your years had carried you past forty,
And your years have carried you past forty,
and you had come to the farther side,
and you have passed to the farther side,
وَدَبَّand crept البَياضَwhiteness خِلالَthrough السَوادِthe blackness
وَدَبَّ البَياضَ خِلالَ السَوادِ
فَأَصبَحتَso you became فيin شِيَةِthe coloring of الأَشهبِthe gray horse
فَأَصبَحتَ في شِيَةِ الأَشهبِ
and whiteness had crept through the black,
And whiteness has crept through the blackness,
leaving you amid the gray hairs of the hoary—
so you now bear the coloring of a gray horse—
وَكَيفَand how تُؤَمِّلُyou hope for طولَlength of الحَياةِlife
وَكَيفَ تُؤَمِّلُ طولَ الحَياةِ
إِذاif كانَwas حِلمُكَyour good sense لَمnot يَعزُبِdepart
إِذا كانَ حِلمُكَ لَم يَعزُبِ
then how can you hope for a long life,
How can you hope for a long life
if your good sense has not deserted you?
