شُغِلناwe were occupied بِكَسبِwith acquiring العِلمِknowledge عَنaway from مَكسَبِthe acquisition of الغِنىwealth
شُغِلنا بِكَسبِ العِلمِ عَن مَكسَبِ الغِنى
كَشُغلِهِمُlike their preoccupation عَنaway from مَكسَبِthe acquisition of العِلمِknowledge بِالوَفرِwith abundant wealth
كَشُغلِهِمُ عَن مَكسَبِ العِلمِ بِالوَفرِ
Our pursuit of knowledge distracted us from acquiring wealth,
Our pursuit of knowledge kept us from gaining wealth,
Just as their pursuit of abundance distracted them from acquiring knowledge.
just as their preoccupation with riches kept them from gaining knowledge.
فَصارَso there came to be لَهُمfor them حَظٌّa share مِنَof الجَهلِignorance وَالغِنىand wealth
فَصارَ لَهُم حَظٌّ مِنَ الجَهلِ وَالغِنى
وَصارَand there came to be لَناfor us حَظٌّa share مِنَof العِلمِknowledge وَالفَقرِand poverty
وَصارَ لَنا حَظٌّ مِنَ العِلمِ وَالفَقرِ
Thus they came to have their share of ignorance and wealth,
So their lot became ignorance and wealth,
While we came to have our share of knowledge and poverty.
and ours became knowledge and poverty.
