أَمِنfrom (introducing a question) بَعدِafter سِتّينَsixty years تَبكيyou weep over الطُلولاthe ruins
أَمِن بَعدِ سِتّينَ تَبكي الطُلولا
وَتَندُبُand you lament رَسماًa dwelling’s trace وانِياًfading مُحيلاtimeworn
وَتَندُبُ رَسماً وانِياً مُحيلا
Is it after sixty years that you weep over the ruins
After sixty, does the night still weep
And lament a fading, timeworn trace,
And mourn a faded, transient trace,
وَقَدand already نَجَّمَhas sprouted الشَيبُgray hair فيin عارِضَيكَboth sides of your beard
وَقَد نَجَّمَ الشَيبُ في عارِضَيكَ
وَجَرَّand has trailed عَلىover مَفرِقِكَyour hair’s parting الذُيولاthe skirts
وَجَرَّ عَلى مَفرِقِكَ الذُيولا
When gray hair has already sprouted on both sides of your beard
While gray has speckled both your cheeks
And trailed its skirts over your hair’s parting?
And braids have draped your forehead's grace?
