فَلَو كانَ يَستَغني عَنِ الشُكرِ ماجِدٌ
لِعِزَّةِbecause of dignity نَفسٍsoul أَوor عُلُوِّloftiness مَكانِstation
لِعِزَّةِ نَفسٍ أَو عُلُوِّ مَكانِ
For if a noble man had no need of gratitude,
If Majid could have done without thanks
Because of dignity of soul or loftiness of station,
For his self-pride or rank’s height,
لَماwould not have أَمَرَcommanded اللَهُGod الحَكيمthe Wise بِشُكرِهgiving thanks to Him
لَما أَمَرَ اللَهُ الحَكيم بِشُكرِه
فَقالَand so He said اِشكُرواgive thanks ليto Me أَيُّهاO you الثَقلانِthe two kinds: humankind and jinn
فَقالَ اِشكُروا لي أَيُّها الثَقلانِ
God the Wise would not have commanded gratitude to Him,
God the Wise would not have ordered giving thanks to Him
Saying, “Give thanks to Me, O humankind and jinn!”
When He said: "Give thanks to Me, O twin burdens."
