This morning I must unburden my breast

with a breath that enlivens verse for poets.

This morning I must give an outpouring, and through it

bring truth to light from the hidden contents of what was veiled.

This morning I must give two outpourings, and I do not

expect any obscurity in them to come from me.

This morning I have no earth, nor any sky to be seen,

save what is scattered from love of Maymun.

At midday I have no body and no heart except

what has become known of my love for Maymun.

At midday my heart is empty, and it holds

nothing besides its remembrance of Maymun, spreading abroad.

At evening I have no secret, and my heart is empty,

save that, whenever Maymun is mentioned, it remembers.

At evening I am bewildered: I know not humankind, nor

any concern for my soul but Maymun, whom it awaited.

    ذكر المَعَاهِدِ عندي حُسنُه حُصرا

    At night, no haunts but hers remain within my thoughts;

the beauty of remembering those haunts alone engrosses me.

At night, nothing but what of her beauty was beheld

by my soul; my soul cast no glance toward anyone else.

    And you who ask me about it, listen to none but me;

no utterance should be heard but what has been proved.

She is the cure; no equal to her has been seen

by my eyes; none but me in our age has had such vision.

She is healing in her brilliance; in beauty

she rivaled the suns of forenoon and surpassed the moon.

    غَزْلي بها ليس من مجازِ مَن شَعرَا

    She is the one whose reality has captured my heart;

my love verse about her is no poet's metaphor.

    She gleams—a night above a dawn—both borne

by two boughs of hers; a seal she parts reveals pearls.

She has a countenance by which her body is upheld,

and a massive frame of hers by which it, too, is upheld.

A youthful maiden, shapely and tender, she beguiled

my heart with love for her; all others were beguiled.

my body forth to drink of love, with no return in sight.

Fair and tender, fully formed, with plump limbs,

slim-waisted as she approaches, full-bottomed as she turns away.

Supple, long-necked, tender, fair and soft-skinned,

gracefully swaying, sweet-scented, a bashful, modest maiden.

Chaste, naturally beautiful, affectionate, she scattered

love upon my heart, by which all others were cast aside.

I would have remained thus this morning, but for beholding Him who created her

and fashioned creation from her, leaving forms behind.

to be measured, though He has decreed destiny.

God is supremely majestic in beauty, and in

His majesty lies an overwhelming grandeur of attributes.

His own will never be seen by any beholder.

when, in truth, no other has appeared beside His attributes?

And how, when He is One amid multiplicity,

manifest and hidden in all that is manifold?

And how, when He, in oneness, created

among us and others, the manifest and the concealed?

For He is the One who knows what shall be and what

has been, from eternity, gathered together and scattered.

And He is the One who wills, whose will is His own,

and powerful, exercising power according to His will.

everlasting, beginningless, all-seeing: He sees sight itself.

and the word 'You' is His, beyond all that has been mentioned.

and none denies that except one who disbelieves.

Whence could it come, when He governs, and no one

besides Him performs an act, should one perceive an act?

So those who command, and all seen issuing commands,

and those who forbid—all are His command, His commanders.

giving thanks to Him heralds increase for whoever gives thanks.

with love that makes them forget fondness for fermented wine.

Sweeter and more fragrant than musk and honey,

it makes young men forget fair women, were it present.

Clearer and more manifest than the forenoon sun; through it,

the moon is swept from your sight without a veil.

His names, he would have forgotten whatever of them he remembered.

the reach of minds and whatever has crossed the heart.

beyond being matched by anything seen or awaited.

is of His attributes, in praise without bounds.

I praise Him, but cannot recount praise as fully as

He Himself has praised Himself, all-powerful.

And from Him, through His attributes and names, I seek Him:

may all my requests be fulfilled and turn to good.
