أيا نَفْسُ إن الله خالقنا قَبْلُ

أيا نَفْسُ إن الله خالقنا قَبْلُ

وليس لنا فرضٌ وليس لنا نفلُ

وليس لنا فرضٌ وليس لنا نفلُ

O soul, surely God created us beforehand,

Oh soul, God created us before

and we had neither obligatory nor voluntary deeds.

We have no obligations or extras

ولا بدّ من أَنَّا نموت إذا يشا

ولا بدّ من أَنَّا نموت إذا يشا

وليس يردُّ الموت فرعٌ ولا أصلُ

وليس يردُّ الموت فرعٌ ولا أصلُ

And we must inevitably die when He wills;

And we must die when He wills

and neither branch nor root can ward off death.

Neither branch nor root can stop death

ولما رأيت الله حسبي فيهما

ولما رأيت الله حسبي فيهما

فبينهما حسبي وبَعْدُ كما قبل

فبينهما حسبي وبَعْدُ كما قبل

And when I saw that God sufficed me in both,

And when I saw God was enough for me

He suffices me between them, and afterward as before.

Between the two my Lord suffices, as before
