سقيتِ وقد تسقى القلوب من الوَجْدِ

سقيتِ وقد تسقى القلوب من الوَجْدِ

قليبي بشرب الود فاتحة الرعد

I gave drink—and hearts may indeed be watered by ardent longing—

You watered—and hearts may be watered by longing—

to my heart: a draught of love, the opening letters of al-Raʿd.

My little heart with love's draught: the opening of al-Ra'd.

فبالله والأملاك والرسل كلهم

فبالله والأملاك والرسل كلهم

بفاتحة الأعراف فاسق من الوجد

بفاتحة الأعراف فاسق من الوجد

Then by God, the angels, and the messengers, all of them,

So by God, the angels, and all the messengers,

by the opening letters of al-Aʿrāf, give me drink of ecstasy.

By the opening of al-A'raf, give me a drink of longing.

وإلا فإنَّ القلب منك بذا الصدّ

وإلا فإنَّ القلب منك بذا الصدّ

بفاتحة للبكر نيل بلا بُعْدِ

بفاتحة للبكر نيل بلا بُعْدِ

Or else, with this rebuff of yours, the heart—

Otherwise, through this rejection of yours, the heart

by the opening letters of the Virgin’s sūra—may it attain union, with no separation.

Has been stricken with the Heifer's opening, without delay.

وفاتحة الأحقاف والستِّ قبلها

وفاتحة الأحقاف والستِّ قبلها

غياثاً غياثاً يا تمام بلا وعد

غياثاً غياثاً يا تمام بلا وعد

And by the opening of al-Aḥqāf and of the six before it:

And by the opening of al-Ahqaf and the six before it—

Succor, succor, O consummate one—no mere promise!

Help, help, O Tamam, without promises!
