فلازم لصمتٍ واعتزالٍ عن الورى

فلازم لصمتٍ واعتزالٍ عن الورى

ودم سهراً والجوعَ كي تتصوّفا

ودم سهراً والجوعَ كي تتصوّفا

So hold fast to silence and seclusion from humankind.

So persist in silence, seclusion from all people

And persist in wakefulness and hunger, so that you may become a Sufi.

And stay up late, go hungry that you may perfect spiritual poverty

وإن بسوى ذا الجمع رمت تصوّفا

وإن بسوى ذا الجمع رمت تصوّفا

فقد رمت شيئاً ليس فيه تصرُّفا

فقد رمت شيئاً ليس فيه تصرُّفا

And if you seek Sufism by means other than this combination,

And if, besides doing all this, you claim to be Sufi

Then you have sought something in which there is no power to act.

Then you claim something with no control over it
