من واسعاتِ صدور الشوق تنفجرُ

In the wide expanses I see longings pouring down.

Bursting from yearning’s spacious breasts.

والركب مندلثٌ سيراً ومضطربٌ

والركب مندلثٌ سيراً ومضطربٌ

شوقاً ومنحرقٌ توقاً ومختمرُ

شوقاً ومنحرقٌ توقاً ومختمرُ

The caravan hastens on its way, restless

With longing, burning with desire, and veiled.

ومنه ملتمعٌ حَذْراً ومجتَمِعٌ

ومنه ملتمعٌ حَذْراً ومجتَمِعٌ

لهواً ومستمعٌ يرى ويختمرُ

لهواً ومستمعٌ يرى ويختمرُ

Among them, one flashes with fear, another gathers

For amusement; another listens, watches, and veils himself.

بعضٌ همامٌ أريبٌ مُنجِدٌ فَطِنٌ

بعضٌ همامٌ أريبٌ مُنجِدٌ فَطِنٌ

والشَّهمُ فيه وفيه المِغْشَم الصَّبِرُ

والشَّهمُ فيه وفيه المِغْشَم الصَّبِرُ

Some are resolute, discerning, helpful, and astute.

The gallant man is among them, and so is the headlong, steadfast man.

وفيه عانقةٌ ملعاً وراتكةٌ

وفيه عانقةٌ ملعاً وراتكةٌ

وَخْداً وراسمةٌ والنصَّ لا يذرُ

وَخْداً وراسمةٌ والنصَّ لا يذرُ

Among them are long-striding she-camels racing, and others quick-stepping,

Striding briskly, and others trotting; the caravan never abandons full speed.

من ذكر غانيةٍ تَسبي بفاترةٍ

من ذكر غانيةٍ تَسبي بفاترةٍ

تضني ببارقةٍ تَشفي وتفتخرُ

تضني ببارقةٍ تَشفي وتفتخرُ

From remembrance of a beauty who captivates with a languid glance,

Who wastes one away with a flash, heals, and takes pride.

من رامَها ظفراً أو نالها سحراً

من رامَها ظفراً أو نالها سحراً

يرتحْ بها سهراً بالرَّوح يصطبرُ

يرتحْ بها سهراً بالرَّوح يصطبرُ

Whoever seeks to win her, or gains her before dawn,

Delights in her through wakefulness, and patiently endures through solace.

شمسٌ طريقتها نجمٌ هدايتها

شمسٌ طريقتها نجمٌ هدايتها

لم تَخلُ في أخذها عن أخذها قمرُ

لم تَخلُ في أخذها عن أخذها قمرُ

Her way is a sun; her guidance is a star.

In her embrace, she is never without a moon embracing her.

ووصلُها غُررٌ وصرمها غَرَرٌ

ووصلُها غُررٌ وصرمها غَرَرٌ

ونيلها بِشرٌ مآلهُ بُشَرُ

ونيلها بِشرٌ مآلهُ بُشَرُ

Union with her is splendor; separation from her is peril.

Attaining her is joy, whose outcome is glad tidings.

وأخذُها لَبَهَا لأنها لِبَها

وأخذُها لَبَهَا لأنها لِبَها

نيل المعالي ودرُّ صيتها دررُ

نيل المعالي ودرُّ صيتها دررُ

And to embrace her is to grasp her essence, for her essence is

Attaining the heights, and the flow of her renown is pearls.

من صيتِ شارِعِها أَحيتْ مَشَارِعُها

من صيتِ شارِعِها أَحيتْ مَشَارِعُها

ذكراً لذاكرها بالرفعِ يُشْتَهَرُ

ذكراً لذاكرها بالرفعِ يُشْتَهَرُ

From her lawgiver’s renown, her watering places have revived

A remembrance for whoever recalls her, renowned through exaltation.

فقال خِِلِّيَ لا تُبْهِمْ لها حَذَرَاً

فقال خِِلِّيَ لا تُبْهِمْ لها حَذَرَاً

فقُلْتُ خُذْهَا جُزيتَ أنت لا حَذِرُ

فقُلْتُ خُذْهَا جُزيتَ أنت لا حَذِرُ

My close friend said, ‘Do not leave her obscure out of caution.’

I said, ‘Take her—may you be rewarded; you are not timid.’

طريقة المصطفى بالمصطفى اصْطُفِيَتْ

طريقة المصطفى بالمصطفى اصْطُفِيَتْ

ذاك اصطفاءٌ لهُ قد صُورت سُوَرُ

ذاك اصطفاءٌ لهُ قد صُورت سُوَرُ

The way of the Chosen One was chosen through the Chosen One.

That is his election; chapters have been given form for him.

تلك التي كُلُّ حُسنٍ في محاسنها

تلك التي كُلُّ حُسنٍ في محاسنها

ولا تُزيغُ ولا تُبقي ولا تَذَرُ

ولا تُزيغُ ولا تُبقي ولا تَذَرُ

That is she in whose beauties all beauty lies;

She does not lead astray, nor spare, nor leave anything behind.

نهجٌ لنورٍٍ بنورٍ قد هَدَى وهُدىً

نهجٌ لنورٍٍ بنورٍ قد هَدَى وهُدىً

للمؤمنين بعِزٍّ بَزَّ من كفروا

للمؤمنين بعِزٍّ بَزَّ من كفروا

A path to a light that has guided through light, and guidance

For believers, with might that surpassed those who disbelieved.

لأنه مُصطفىً بربه وصفا

لأنه مُصطفىً بربه وصفا

من خلقه وكفى شرَّاً له شَرَرُ

من خلقه وكفى شرَّاً له شَرَرُ

For he is chosen by his Lord and has become pure

Among His creatures; sparks are evil enough for him.

الله قَدَّره قبلاً وأرسله

الله قَدَّره قبلاً وأرسله

بعداً وصوَّرهُ ومنه ذي الصُّورُ

بعداً وصوَّرهُ ومنه ذي الصُّورُ

God ordained him beforehand and sent him

Afterward, and fashioned him; these forms come from him.

تَبّاً لحاسده تُرْباً لشانئه

تَبّاً لحاسده تُرْباً لشانئه

ثبتاً لناصره بالرُّعب ينتصرُ

ثبتاً لناصره بالرُّعب ينتصرُ

Ruin to whoever envies him; dust upon whoever hates him.

Steadfastness to his supporter; through terror he prevails.

جَمٌّ فضائله جهرٌ فرائضه

جَمٌّ فضائله جهرٌ فرائضه

حُمَّت مفاخره والغير ما افتخرُ

حُمَّت مفاخره والغير ما افتخرُ

Abundant are his virtues; manifest are his prescribed duties.

His glories were decreed; others have nothing to boast of.

خير الخلائق من دنا له ذعناً

خير الخلائق من دنا له ذعناً

رواحه زائرٌ يغدو ويبتكرُ

رواحه زائرٌ يغدو ويبتكرُ

He is the best of creatures; whoever approaches him in submission

Visits in the evening, sets out at dawn, and comes early.

طيبٌ عناصره طيبٌ معاصره

طيبٌ عناصره طيبٌ معاصره

ظفرٌ مَظاهرهُ عِداهُ تُحتَقَرُ

ظفرٌ مَظاهرهُ عِداهُ تُحتَقَرُ

Pure are his elements; pure is whoever lives in his time.

His manifestations are victory; his enemies are despised.

صفت ضمائره كفت كلاءته

صفت ضمائره كفت كلاءته

لمَّتْ نَوافِلُه قَوماً قد انتثروا

لمَّتْ نَوافِلُه قَوماً قد انتثروا

His inner thoughts are pure; his guardianship suffices.

His gifts gathered a people who had scattered.

سبقاً عنايته غنىً ولايته

سبقاً عنايته غنىً ولايته

وُدٌّ هدايته بشراً به النُّذُرُ

وُدٌّ هدايته بشراً به النُّذُرُ

His care comes beforehand; his guardianship is wealth.

His guidance is love; through him, warnings are glad tidings.

لا يدرك العقل من مديحه لسوى

لا يدرك العقل من مديحه لسوى

أن المدائح فيه كلها انحصروا

أن المدائح فيه كلها انحصروا

The intellect grasps nothing of his praise beyond

The fact that all praises are encompassed in him.

والأصل والفرع منه كلما وُجدا

والأصل والفرع منه كلما وُجدا

ومنه ما وَجدا والعين والأثر

ومنه ما وَجدا والعين والأثر

Root and branch derive from him whenever they come into being,

And from him comes what they both found, the essence and the trace.

قِدماً تداوله بالمدح ألسنةٌ

قِدماً تداوله بالمدح ألسنةٌ

وقلَّما عَبَّرُوا من كُثْرِ ما عبروا

وقلَّما عَبَّرُوا من كُثْرِ ما عبروا

From of old, tongues have taken turns praising him,

Yet they expressed little of all that they had traversed,

لأنَّ ما عاينوا بعض الذي بهم

لأنَّ ما عاينوا بعض الذي بهم

من سِرِّهِ وهم لم يأتهم عشُرُ

من سِرِّهِ وهم لم يأتهم عشُرُ

For what they witnessed was only part of what lay within them

Of his secret—and not even a tenth had reached them.

وكنتُ متَّبعاً ولست مبتدعاً

وكنتُ متَّبعاً ولست مبتدعاً

لكونه مرتعاً رتعْتُ أعتمرُ

لكونه مرتعاً رتعْتُ أعتمرُ

I have been a follower, and am no innovator.

For he is a pasture: I have grazed there, visiting as a pilgrim.

فالكون أجمعه من سرِّ نقطته

فالكون أجمعه من سرِّ نقطته

وسرُّ خلقته في الخلق منتشرُ

وسرُّ خلقته في الخلق منتشرُ

For the whole cosmos comes from the secret of his point,

And the secret of his created form is spread throughout creation.

خَلقٌ صفا خُلُقاً خلق نفى حرقاً

خَلقٌ صفا خُلُقاً خلق نفى حرقاً

خلقٌ كفى طُرُقاً كالشهب تستترُ

خلقٌ كفى طُرُقاً كالشهب تستترُ

A being pure in character, a being who banished burning pain,

A being who suffices for paths that hide like shooting stars.

هو الضياء الذي بالنور طلعتهُ

هو الضياء الذي بالنور طلعتهُ

هو السناء الذي في الأفق ينتشرُ

هو السناء الذي في الأفق ينتشرُ

He is the radiance whose rising is in light.

He is the splendor that spreads across the horizon.

هو السماح الذي بالجود ينكفحُ

هو السماح الذي بالجود ينكفحُ

هو السحاب الذي بالغيث ينهمرُ

هو السحاب الذي بالغيث ينهمرُ

He is the liberality that pours forth in generosity.

He is the cloud that pours down rain.

هو الفخار الذي نفى الفخارَ وَفَى

هو الفخار الذي نفى الفخارَ وَفَى

وعداً ورعداً بفخر صدّ من فخروا

وعداً ورعداً بفخر صدّ من فخروا

He is the glory that banished vainglory and fulfilled

A promise and a thunderous warning, with glory that repelled those who boasted.

وحيثما الأصل طاب الفرع طاب به

وحيثما الأصل طاب الفرع طاب به

ففرعه الطيب لا يبقي ولا يذرُ

ففرعه الطيب لا يبقي ولا يذرُ

Wherever the root is pure, the branch is pure through it.

So his pure branch spares nothing and leaves nothing behind.

الله أكمله للحمْدِ أحرفه

الله أكمله للحمْدِ أحرفه

والمجد أشرفه مكمَّلاً بشرُ

والمجد أشرفه مكمَّلاً بشرُ

God perfected him; his letters are for praise.

And glory ennobled him, a perfected human being.

وخاتماً رسلاً وخاتماً سُبُلا

وخاتماً رسلاً وخاتماً سُبُلا

والبدء منه ومنه الختم والخبر

والبدء منه ومنه الختم والخبر

And sealing the messengers, and sealing the paths.

The beginning is from him, and from him the ending and the tidings.

به ألوذُ ملاذ من له فطرت

به ألوذُ ملاذ من له فطرت

ذنوبه رُوحَهُ والقلب ينفطر

ذنوبه رُوحَهُ والقلب ينفطر

In him I seek refuge, like one whose

Sins have torn his soul, while his heart breaks.

ومنه أرجو كمال مقصدٍ فترت

ومنه أرجو كمال مقصدٍ فترت

أعمالنا عنه والأطماع ما فتروا

أعمالنا عنه والأطماع ما فتروا

From him I hope for the fulfillment of a goal toward which

Our deeds have slackened, though our desires have not slackened.

عليه مني الذي ينهي الصلاة كما

عليه مني الذي ينهي الصلاة كما

أنهى الذي هو لا فردٌ ولا زُمَرُ

أنهى الذي هو لا فردٌ ولا زُمَرُ

Upon him from me be what brings blessing to its utmost, just as

The One who is neither an individual nor multitudes brought it to its utmost.
