لئن قلتم جسمي نحيل فذا جسمي
يرقيكمit raises you أعلىthe highest المعاليheights of distinction بلاwithout رسمoutward form
يرقيكم أعلى المعالي بلا رسم
If indeed you say my body is frail, then this body of mine
If you say my body is thin, then this is my body
Raises you to the loftiest heights, without outward form.
That elevates you to the highest glories without prescription
وشيبيand my greying قبلbefore الشيبgreying ذاكthat دلالةa sign
وشيبي قبل الشيب ذاك دلالة
علىof أنَّthat ليI have همَّاًan aspiration رقىhas risen ليfor me علىabove الهمِّsorrow
على أنَّ لي همَّاً رقى لي على الهمِّ
And my greying before its time—that is a sign
And my greyness before greyness is an indication
That I have an aspiration which has risen for me above sorrow.
That I have a care that has elevated me above cares
