and your rejection, O sweet-natured one—but not distance.

if this coldness and this rejection persist toward me.

your turning away, remoteness, deceit, and rancor?

swayed by the hips—or is that her figure?

and pearl-beads, or your front teeth, or a necklace?

And is it your face, or a full moon and a radiant sun?

And your cheek, or liquid gold, or roses?

And in your polished chest, a sharpened spear—

an ivory casket resembles it—or is it a breast?

It almost cleaves the heart before cooling it,

and cuts through it, with no skin to bar it.

And your saliva—unmixed wine, or honey?

A cure and an illness for hearts, for

the entrails, heart, and liver melt for it.

A cure when closeness generously grants a kiss,

and an illness for us if freely given when distance enfolds it.

You defend the world as though you were a father,

tender toward all humankind, and they were children.

your son is a sword, and Time is your scabbard.

And amid abundant honor and eminence you are

a sovereign to whom ill fortune and good fortune are equal.

the upright monotheistic faith would not have appeared, nor guidance,

    nor bounty gained renown, nor gifts been remembered;
