You wish to drink from our water,

Yet it is bitter and salty, and cannot be drunk.

You could never ride an unruly mount,

For the unruly young male camel cannot be ridden.

If you possess reason and discernment,

Or are among those who desire piety,

So ask the All-Merciful for sustenance from His bounty,

And stop begging from people, O conceited one.

And do not be a burden on a friend,

For a burden is neither loved nor befriended.

Indeed, the noble, free man among our people

Would not beg, even if he died of hunger.

This is astonishing; we see nothing like it,

And my saying is more astonishing than that.

O our people, forgive and make allowances,

And pardon the offender, and do not reproach.

And do not say that I am an aggressor,

But if war is waged against me, I have no fear.
