ما حاجتي في ذمِّ أهل زماني
وبهمand through them مصالحbenefits فافتىmy need (probable reading) وأمانيand my hopes
وبهم مصالح فافتى وأماني
What need have I to censure the people of my time?
Why should I blame people of my time
And through them come relief for [my need] and fulfillment of my hopes.
When I have interests to gain through them

If I fault one of them and censure him,
If I denounce one and find fault in him
I am not free of fault or deficiency.
I am not without vice and imperfection

Their hated and their beloved alike would surely come under
Let the one I hate and the one I love

Enter into my denunciation and affection

فعلامَ أذكرُ عيبَ غيرِي واغلاً

في ذكرِه وأنَا الخبيرُ بشاني
So why mention another's fault, intruding
Why then do I recount the faults of others
into its telling, when I know my own condition well?
While indulged in talking of them, though fully aware of my own state

Indeed, I have faults and am not blameless.
If the critic is himself imperfect
Shall I censure another while motes cloud my sight?
Shall I denounce others while specks impair my own vision

If the sick man looked to his own maladies
he would fault no person in his worldly life.
He would not find faults in anyone in this world

And abstain from blaming them to the Merciful

Do you think you are immune that you denounce their nature
from the harm of wounding them with a tongue's sharp edge?
With what your tongue’s blade injures them

If you denounce them, your own faults amongst them multiply
and they will assail you with hatred and rancor.
And they will hate you with enmity and loathing
