فلاso do not تحسبنَّever think البُعْدَdistance يمحوerases ودادكمaffection for you
ولكنَّbut هذاthis الشوقlonging أصبحَhas become غالبيoverpowering me
So never think that distance erases my affection for you.
Think not that distance can efface fond thoughts,
Yet this longing has come to overpower me.
Though longing fills my soul and reigns supreme;
ولستand I am not بناسٍone who forgets منof أُناسٍpeople فضائلاvirtues
وإنand even if كدَّرُواthey muddied بالبُعدthrough distance صَفْوَthe clarity of مَشاربيmy drinking waters
Nor am I one to forget people's virtues,
I am no common man of common mould,
Even if through distance they muddy my clear drinking waters.
Though absence may make dull affection's gleam;
وعهديand my pledge قديماًof old لاnot يزالُceases المدَىall time وإنand even if
تَوَالَىcame in succession علىupon me الهَمُّgrief مِنfrom كلevery جانبِside
And my pledge of old endures for all time, even if
My troth is old, and time cannot destroy,
Grief comes upon me in succession from every side.
Though grief oppress, from every quarter's way;
فأَلْزَمُthus more inseparable منthan طوقneck-ring الحَمامِdoves مودَّتيmy affection
وأثبتُand more firmly fixed رسماًin marking منthan خطوطlines الرواجبِfinger joints
For my affection clings closer than a dove's neck-ring,
I'll prison fondness in the ringdove's neck,
And is more firmly etched than the creases of finger joints.
And write the lines that dutifulsubjects pay;
ولستُand I am not مِنof القومِthe people الذينwho إذاwhen نَأَىgoes far away

Nor am I of those who, when parted from
Not I of those whose friendship fades away,
Their devoted friend, betray a companion's affection.
When boon companions farther journeys roam;
وماand not أناI ممنof those who إنif خليلٌa dear friend هَفَاstumbled يكنwould be

Nor am I one who, if a friend should stumble, would be
Nor one when friends prove false to turn and stay,
Lying in wait for him as he walks upon a keen sword's edge.
And walk the path with constant guide alone;

I am a man whose neighbor suffers no wrong, nor am I
I am the man no comrade to upbraid,
One to expose the faults of a loyal, close companion.
No flaunting loose companions' faults to warmer;

Ah, O faithful sheikh, who has become
Ho! reverend Shaykh, who truly dear are made,
To us the best of our companions and kin.
The best of friends, aye, best of all that come here
لقدindeed عُدْتَyou have returned ياO أهلman of الرعايةsolicitude مُرسلاsending

Indeed, O man of solicitude, you have once more sent
For thou, good guardian, chide with gentle touch,
A gentle reproach through a dear, reproving friend,
Thy servant, though forgetting courtesy;
لإبطائناfor our delay ردَّsending back الجوابِthe reply إليكمُto you
وتقصيرناand our neglect قِدْماًformerly لرسمregarding the custom of المآدبِfeasts
For our delay in sending the reply back to you,
I own remiss, while ye do overmuch,
And our past neglect of the custom of feasts.
O'erlooking faults, absolving penitents;

تُقيلونyou pardon زلاّتِmissteps توالتcame in succession لتائبِfor a penitent
Yes, the failing was indeed ours, and you
No poor excuse have I, your gen'rous mood
Pardon the successive slips of one who repents.
Tells that ye shut out every thought of ill;
وماand not عندناwith us عُذْرٌan excuse ولكنbut صفحكمyour pardon

And we have no excuse, but your pardon
Greet and forgive, forget whate'er's not good,
Tells us that every fault will be covered.
Fill up, give lavishly, forbear, and still

So make peace, forgive, pardon, overlook, lead, and be generous;
Be patient, pardon, counsel wand'rers' feet -
And bestow favor, bear patiently, forgive, and sincerely counsel one who returns.
All peace to thee, what hour the light clouds break;
عليكupon you سلاميmy greeting of peace كلevery حينmoment وساعةand hour
متَىwhenever لاحflashes بَرْقٌlightning فيin خلالthe midst of السحائبِthe clouds
My greeting of peace be upon you at every moment and hour,
Nor longing mourn, nor bird complain its sweet,
Whenever lightning flashes amid the clouds,
Nor camel-guide sing song for trav'ller's sake.
وماand whenever حَنَّyearns مشتاقٌone who longs وماand whenever ناحَlaments طائرٌa bird

And whenever one who longs yearns, and whenever a bird laments,
And whenever white, purebred camels journey with a rider.
