    وساداتنا منكم ممات لنا المَطْلُ

    O our beloveds, union with you is life to us;

    And, our masters, delay from you is death to us.

    وليس لنا في غير ذكركُمُ شُغْلُ

    We are absorbed in remembering you and wander, love-dazed, in love for you;

    We have no occupation other than remembering you.

    If the days generously grant me union with you,

    Then all the bitterness of time grows sweet to us.

    And if one day they begrudge us your nearness,

    Then all time's sweetness is molten metal to us.

    Where can the heart find wine and rest,

    When not for one hour of its life does it forget you?

    And how can the heart find solace after parting from you,

    When my heart is never empty of remembrance of you?

    You have begrudged us union, yet

    Your stinginess and avarice adorn you in my eyes.

    My reprover never tires of blaming me, while my ears

    Are deaf to the entry of blame and reproach.

    Those who know excuse me in love,

    While those whom ignorance has robbed reproach me for it.

    How long this separation, rejection, abandonment, and aversion,

    Your turning away, distance, rancor, and vengeance?

    I am indeed possessed of long sorrow and a choking lump,

    For all time, if Juml persists in her abandonment.

    A maiden whose radiant face outshines the sun,

    When she emerges from her curtained chamber while the forenoon is young.

    She has a sweet smiling mouth, its teeth spaced and gapped,

    And a downcast eye, dark against its white, adorned by kohl,

    Kohl-dark; and a slender waist complaining of separation's pain,

    From her hips—when she stands, their weight bears it down.

    And a polished, soft cheek, not marred

    By whiteness; an ember overlays it, without any polish.

    فأيسر ما قد شئت من هَجْرها القَتْلُ

    She struck me with abandonment and persisted in coldness;

    So death is the least I have wished for amid her desertion.

    فهذا بلاءٌ حلَّ في الناس مِن قَبلُ

    Take comfort, my heart: I am not the first lover;

    For this is an affliction that has befallen people before.

    عسَى بعد هذا البُعْدِ يلتئمُ الشملُ

    Do not grieve, for time is a master of change;

    Perhaps, after this distance, the scattered company will reunite.

    Behold, the days reveal wonders,

    Before which mind, thought, and reason are bewildered.

    فلا تكترثْ إن نالك النهلُ والعَلُّ

    Time's vicissitudes will reveal what is to be;

    So do not fret if the first draught and the next come your way.

    Do not be deceived by a companion's friendship

    Which he shows in some circumstance, with rancor prompting it.

    وظاهرُه حلوٌ وباطنه صِلُّ

    For someone among humankind offers you sweet speech;

    His outward self is sweet, but his inward self is a viper.

    So repay people justly with the like of their deeds:

    Goodness for goodness, when they have strayed.

    If you do not repay your adversary with evil and harm,

    You will be wronged, and neither hand nor foot will remain safe.

    فما حاجتي إنْ قلت في قولهم زَلُّوا

    They say pardon is better than requital;

    What need have I, if I say they erred in their claim?

    ألم تر أن العفوَ ناسخُه النَّصْلُ

    But the verses of the Book came to abrogate it;

    Do you not see that the blade abrogates pardon?

    May God curse whoever closes his eyelids over grit,

    When misfortune, oppression, and humiliation have befallen him.

    If you are among people whose affection for you is pure,

    Give them affection, and grow weary when they do.

    If they sever the cord of union, do not be

    One who rejoins a cord for them when ignorance severs it.

    وخلِّ ولا تسأل سُرَاهُم إذا حَلُّوا

    Be like them in every circumstance, and do not swerve;

    Leave them, and do not ask about their night journey when they alight.

    وأبغضْ بمقدارٍ يدومُ لك الظِّلُّ

    Love in measure, and do not be excessive;

    Hate in measure, so that shade may endure for you.

    وشرُّهمُ مَنْ في شمائِله يَغْلُو

    The best of people are those who measure hatred and love;

    The worst of them are those who go to extremes in their character.

    Do not keep joking at every hour,

    In every place, lest a base man hold you in contempt.

    فربَّ قريبِ الودِّ صاحَبُه قتلُ

    Do not entrust your secret to everyone close to you;

    For many a friend close in affection has killing as his companion.

    ألا إن عيبَ المرءُ يستره البَذلُ

    Cloak yourself in generosity's robe against every faultfinder;

    Indeed, generosity conceals a person's faults.

    تَعِشْ سالماً والقولُ يتبعه الفِعْلُ

    Give your kin and whoever has a right his due;

    You will live unharmed, with action following speech.

    Do not backbite someone who is absent,

    Even if he is blameworthy; justice is more fitting for you.

    وكن عاذراً للخل إن زلَّت النَّعْلُ

    Nor be a chatterer, abundant in safety [wording unclear];

    Be forgiving toward your friend if his sandal slips.

    Nor carry needlessly if, for the task, you are not

    Possessed of strength, lest the load weigh you down.

    Nor turn away from one who bears affection, seeking

    A distant affection unworthy of generosity.

    فلا خيرَ في الأغصانِ إنْ خُبثَ الأصْلُ

    Do not hope in a branch whose root is baseness;

    There is no good in the branches if the root is corrupt.

    Do not forsake resolve in any circumstance,

    Even if wealth and horses abound in your company.

    فقدرُك من عليائهِ لم يزل يَعْلُو

    Keep company only with someone devout and well-mannered;

    For your standing keeps rising through his loftiness.

    فإن العِدَى عندي كثيرٌ وإن قَلُّوا

    Never underestimate enemies because they are few;

    For enemies, to my mind, are many even when few.

    فإنَّ أخَا الشُّورَى يعظمه الكُلُّ

    Seek counsel when you are right in your opinion;

    For everyone honors the man who takes counsel.

    Whoever relies alone on his own opinion in a matter—

    The majority agree to blame him and find fault.

    Do not intend to linger in the land, for only

    Those never parted from the camel saddle are honored among people.

    كذاكَ على طُولِ المدَى يُسأم الوَبْلُ

    A person's prolonged stay always grows wearisome;

    So too, over time, does heavy rain grow wearisome.

    Do not disdain a forceful saying from a man

    Who is weak, for honey is cast forth by bees.

    Many a weak man has sound judgment and understanding,

    While many a strong man among people speaks only frivolity.

    I have seen the children of this world lean together

    All against whoever has no family.

    Though I am young in years, I am

    Middle-aged through my many experiences with its children.

    So I have found no friend among them who sustains for me

    His friendship without rancor taking possession of him.

    ولستُ أخَا جهلٍ على طُول ما أَبْلُوا

    I am well acquainted with time and its people;

    Nor am I a man of ignorance, after all my long experience.
