My joy is complete if I see you approaching,

Out of longing; and this world is joy and good fortune.

If these two are absent, life is wretched,

With worry and fears keeping it company there through the night.

A letter came to me from our cherished friend,

Esteemed by us, even if circumstances change.

A loving friend with longstanding affection, sincere in counsel,

    Steadfast despite adversity, never altered.

Wise and sober-minded, he never deserves

People's gossip and hearsay, throughout his life.

He pardons, and passes the evening distinguished by rare qualities,

When they camp amid misdeeds and chatter.

He keeps his soul unsullied by others' faults,

And raises it above what they have done and said.

There is no good in wealth if wisdom is lacking,

Nor in intellect if they turn away from your side.

    بنظمكَ فيه رقةٌ وجميلُ

    A letter came to me from you, bearing blessing and radiance;

Your verse within it holds tenderness and beauty.

But, my friend, it stirred what lay still,

Like the day the departing travelers' camels journeyed by night.

And when we read it, we rejoiced, and it gladdened us,

As reunion gladdens a heart soothed by companionship.

And I care nothing if you come to visit,

Certainly, even if foes wrong me and attack.

And I am kept from retaliating against an enemy

By the noble ways in your counsels, and by your virtues.

And I fear separation may efface our bond,

    As shade dispelled intense sorrow.

And we find solace in meeting you, and are blessed with your nearness,

And bewilderment and error are lifted from us.
