Let him weep blood and tears,
Let him cry tears of blood and weeping
Lamenting a faded trace and a dwelling-place.
Lamenting a figure of kindness and openness

Do not ignorantly reproach him for love,
Do not rebuke him for ignorance in love
For he has turned a deaf ear to reproach.
For he is deaf to rebuke

When he was my peer and the soul of my affection,
When he was my comfort and soul's delight
For an age, and we were equals in love.
For an age while we were immersed in love

His affections wore the nights away,
His affection wasted away the nights
And the water of affection became a mirage.
So the water of affection became glittering

Days when the dark-lipped beauty showed me
Days when she of languorous glances showed me
A face like the sun and tresses like the night.
Her face like the sun, her tresses night's darkness

For if you sought to repel what I endure,
If you could relieve my suffering
You would not have the strength to repel it.
You could not have borne the effort

I passed the night in burning regret as though
A sleepless man assailed by a viper.
Bitten by an asp writhing in agony

How can I show patience when the fire of passion
Has left a burning sting within my heart?
Has left a blaze in my heart?

He surpassed mankind in nobility
As he rose high in root and branch.

He brought comfort and generosity to the land
So they gathered as equals in his bounty.
So they gathered in his openness

May you never cease to pursue noble deeds.
And still strive for favors

You surpassed all people in munificence
And gave until you exhausted what you had amassed.

You surpassed the people of the times in wisdom
And in clear intellect and accomplishment.
An astute, accomplished genius

You are the desired one, if a cloud gathers
Or persist in rainfall and returning showers.
Or remoteness draws near

On the day of battle, yours is a heart
In the day of turmoil, you have a heart
That puts the two horizons to shame in breadth.
Capacious enough for all the pulsating hearts

May you always be called to noble deeds.
You still are called on for favors

I have not said this poetry for you alone
Rather, it came forth from you, hastening.
But it flows from you

Are scorched by her within their entrails.
