I pass the night with a heart wounded by weeping,
My heart is wounded, crying throughout the night,
And an eye pouring tears from longing.
My eyes pouring tears from passionate yearning.
وشوقٌand longing وبَلْبالٌand turmoil وفِكْرٌand thought ولوعةٌand anguish

And longing, turmoil, thought, and anguish,
Longing, confusion, thoughts, and grief,
And a fire of separation strikes sparks in my heart.
A fire from separation burning in my heart.

My longing grows time after time,
My yearning grows at times after time,
Whenever lightning appears, coursing and flashing through the night.
When a gleam of lightning flashes, it starts to shine.

And if a rain cloud appears over al-Aridiyya,
If she reveals herself from behind the veil
My heart nearly overflows with longing at its sight.
My heart nearly bursts from ardency and zeal.

I remembered a time with my beloved and a place
I recalled the era of my beloved and a place
Where incense, sweet basil, and musk wafted their scent.
Where there was dew, basil, and diffusing musk.

And days when pleasure's branch was tender, when I
Days of returning to play as a youth,
Was young, frolicking in the arena of youth.
Frolicking in the field of adolescence.

And days when the ankleted maiden offered us pure love,
Days when young maidens inspire love,
And we gave her union and affection, and she gave in return.
We grant them affection and loyalty that they beckon.

A maiden gliding with a swaying gait, as though she were
A maiden sways coquettishly, as though
A slender branch swaying upon the curve of a sand dune.
She is a twig atop a delicate branch bending.

And a radiant breast whose glow adorned the jewels,
Adorned with jewelry, gleaming.
And a shining face brighter than the full moon's radiance.
Her face shining brighter than the full moon's light.

Her saliva is cool water, flavored
Mingled with pure wine when she greets the morning.
With the choicest wine if she wakes up early.
ولمand did not أنسَI forget أيامَthe days of العتابreproach وإذand when أناI

Nor have I forgotten the days of reproach, when I
I cannot forget the days of reproach when
Kept my secret love hidden, while she made it plain.
I concealed my love while she made it obvious.
نبثٌّwe pour out عتاباًreproaches بينناbetween us وكأننيand as though I

أُلَوِّحُI hint فيin ودِّيmy love لهاfor her وتصرِّحُand she declares openly
We exchanged reproaches, as though I
She whispered reproach between us as if
Hinted at my love for her, while she spoke openly.
I signaled my affection yet she declared it aloud.

And she hid her love for fear of talebearers, yet
We hid our love fearing gossip, but
Our tears disclosed our passion and longing.
Our tears in passion and longing gave it away.

And when she saw my hair change color, she turned away,
When she saw my hair turning gray, she turned
For beauties turn away from the gray-haired man.
Away, for young women shun an aging man.

She turned away, while my heart melted with bitterness,
She left me with a heart melting in bitterness
And my eye streamed with flowing tears.
And eyes pouring tears like rain.

فقالتso she said لأنbecause الشيبgray hair كالفقرlike poverty أقبَحُmost ugly
So I said to her, "Fear God, our Lord."
So I said to her, fearing God our Lord,
She said, "For gray hair, like poverty, is most ugly."
But she said gray hair is uglier than poverty.

فهاso here أناI فيin بحرa sea منof التِّيهِbewilderment أسبَحُI swim
I went away, not knowing which path to take,
I left not knowing where to go.
And here I am, swimming in a sea of bewilderment.
So here I am, swimming in a sea of confusion.
فبُدِّلْتُso I received in exchange بالنعماءin place of bliss بُؤْسَيmy misery وإننيand indeed I

So my bliss was replaced by misery, and indeed I
My blessings were replaced with misery, and
Found hopes more comforting than what I endured.
I found death more comforting than what I'm enduring.

And when I saw Time unleash its vicissitudes,
When I saw fate overturning,
I returned to the course that was better.
I returned to the matter that is best.

And I steered my white camels, making for a lord,
I set out for Isa, heading towards the Master,
And no desert or barren plain turned me away from him.
Not deterred by desolation and hardship.

مدحتكI praised you ياO شمسsun of الزمانthe age وبدرهand its full moon
بمدحwith praise صُراحunalloyed لستI am not غيركanyone other than you أمدحُI praise
I praised you, O sun of the age and its full moon,
I praise you, sun and moon of time,
With unalloyed praise; I praise none but you.
With sincere praise, none but you I laud.
وهبتَyou bestowed بلاwithout منٍّreminding of favors جزيلاan abundance منof اللُّهاgifts
فجاوزْتso you exceeded حتىuntil خِلتI thought أنكthat you تمزحُyou jest
You bestowed lavish gifts without reproach,
You have bestowed generously without favor,
And went so far that I thought you were jesting.
Exceeding until you seemed to jest.

فلاso do not تحسبنِّيsuppose me عنaway from حِواركyour conversation أجنحُI turn aside
A bounty worthy of Hatim has indeed bound me,
Your sublime grace has enthralled me,
So do not think I will turn away from conversation with you.
So think not that I shy away from your company.
ولاand may not زلتI cease فيin نعماكَyour bounty أرفلُI revel شاكراgrateful
ولمand why لاnot يؤدِّىrenders الشكرَthanks منwho هوhe يريحُenjoys ease
And may I ever revel gratefully in your bounty,
I remain reveling in your gifts with gratitude,
And why should one who enjoys ease not give thanks?
How can one who rests not repay gratitude?
ومَدحيand my praise لكمfor you طولthroughout الزمانtime تجارتيmy trade
فهاكموso take, all of you ربحيmy profit ولاand may not زلتُI cease أرْبحُI profit
My praise of you through all time is my trade;
My praise of you is my trade through time,
So take my profit, and may I never cease to profit.
For you are the sea of generosity, glory, and freshness,
لأنكbecause you بحرُthe sea of الجودِgenerosity والمجدِand glory والندَىand bounty
ولاand may not زلتَyou cease طولَthroughout الدهرtime تُبْدِىyou display وتفرحُand you rejoice
For you are the sea of generosity, glory, and bounty,
You have always brought and spread joy.
And may you ever display your bounty and rejoice through all time.
No need but to you it refers,

ولاand no أمرmatter نَبْغيwe seek منكfrom you إلاexcept وينجحُand it succeeds
So no need has any recourse but you,
No matter we seek but through you succeeds.
And every matter we seek from you meets with success.
No grateful one but returns in thanks,
ولاand no معتفٍseeker of bounty إلاexcept ويرجعُand he returns شاكراًgrateful
ولاand no سائلٌpetitioner يعروكَvisits you إلاexcept ويفلحُand he prospers
And no seeker of bounty returns without thanks,
No beseecher finds you but achieves.
And no petitioner visits you without prospering.
No destitute but you better his affairs,
ولاand no مُعْدَمٌdestitute man إلاexcept وأصلحتَand you set right شأنَهhis affairs
ولاand no بائسwretched man يأتيكcomes to you إلاexcept ويصلحand he fares better
And no destitute man but you set his affairs right,
No wretch comes to you but prospers.
And no wretched man comes to you without his lot improving.
I greet you like the shining moons, nay brighter,

وحلمُكَand your forbearance كالأجْبالlike mountains بَلrather هوit أرجحُweightier
Your face is like moons—rather, it is brighter;
Your wisdom like mountains, nay loftier.
And your forbearance is like mountains—rather, it is weightier.
Undeterred from you by great distances.

ولمand did not يَثنِهاturn her aside عنكَfrom you البعادdistance المطوِّحُflinging far away
And take this bride, unveiled, a daughter of an hour,
Ancient poetry boasts of you through time,
Nor did far-flinging distance turn her away from you.
Continuing to flow and frolic.
تُفاخِرُvies in glory with أشعارُthe poems of الأوائلِthe ancients فيكمُabout you
مدَىthroughout الدهرِtime لاmay not زالتْshe cease تسيرُshe travels وتمرحُand frolics
She vies with the ancients' poems in praising you,
When weighed for meaning and refinement,
Through all time—may she ever journey and frolic.
All other poetry seems deficient.
إذاwhen وزنتshe is weighed بالشعرagainst poetry معنىin meaning ودقةًand subtlety
يخفُّweighs light لهاbeside her كلall القَرِيضِverse وترجحُand she weighs heavier
When weighed against poetry for meaning and subtlety,
She gains renewal over time whenever
All verse weighs light beside her, and she outweighs it.
An evening or dawn passes upon the world.
وتزدادُand she increases تجديداًin freshness علىthrough الدهرtime كلَّماwhenever

And she grows fresher through time, whenever
If she is recited, every listener is enthralled,
An evening and a morning pass over the world.
Lighter compositions seem deficient next to her splendor.

And if she is recited, every ear bows to her,
And Khufaf weighs light beside her singer, while she outweighs him.
