يقولونَthey say ليto me ماwhat بالُthe matter with لونِكyour complexion شاحباًpale
فقلتُso I said لهمto them إنindeed الحبيبَthe beloved سَلانيhas forgotten me
They say to me, “Why is your complexion pale?”
So I told them, “Indeed, the beloved has forgotten me.”
تسليتُI ceased pining عنfor حيٍّa people بداbecame apparent ليto me بعادهمtheir estrangement
وفارقتُهمand I parted from them بالكُرهagainst my will مُنذsince زَمانِa long time
I had ceased pining for a people whose estrangement became plain to me,
and had parted from them against my will long ago.
ولكنّهbut it لماwhen أتانيcame to me كتابُهمtheir letter
وجدّدand it renewed ليfor me تذكارَهمthe memory of them فَشَجَانيso it saddened me
But when their letter came to me,
and renewed my memory of them, it stirred my sorrow,
وذكّرنيand it reminded me عهداًa time مضَىthat had passed بوصالهمin union with them
فصيرَso it made قلبيmy heart دائمceaseless in الخَفَقَانِthrobbing
and reminded me of a bygone time of union with them,
setting my heart throbbing without cease.
عليكupon you سلامىmy peace ماas long as همَيpours down واكفُthe downpour of الحياrain
وماand as long as دارتِrevolve الأفلاكthe celestial spheres بالمَلَوَانِthrough night and day
My peace be upon you as long as the rain comes pouring down,
and as long as the celestial spheres revolve through night and day.
