And to my heart it was like pure, chilled water.

And when it came to me one morning and I read it,

My heart let go of memories of ruined camps and an old haunt,

And of neighbors at the bend, and places of play

At Ḥuzwā, and of Zayd, ʿAmr, and Mazyad.

Beautiful ones we spent in defiance of the envious.

A work of thought, jewel-like, with inlaid

    Images of pearl and peridot.

It came forth in verse and prose, its lines

Contained on a page like pearls strung in order.

Necklaces of pure gold on the necks of bashful maidens.

The scent of musk wafted from its spreading fragrance,

As rosewater's scent wafts on a graceful youth's cheek.

And gracious praise, together with an ornate greeting,

Came from a lord to one raised to lordship.

And when I read the verse, my poetic gift surged

Like the surf of a sea foaming with eloquence.

So never think that distance makes a lover forget

A noble person, even if they dwell in the farthest abode.

Nor ever think that Muhammad al-Muʿwali

Is shaken by the tremors of a slanderer and the envious.

And live in joy, remain amid blessings, and continue

In well-being, in bliss and everlasting honor.
