The heart has grown sick from separation,

    And my body remains emaciated.

Through parting from the one who left my heart distraught,

Sick, sorrowful, wandering in love, and ailing.

O departing one, my mind departs in your wake,

Truly, beyond doubt, since you resolved to leave.

    لا زلتَ بعدك هائماً مشغولا

    O traveler, my mind and reason have been lost;

Since your departure, I remain distraught and preoccupied.

O noblest in character, you have become

Stingy with meetings toward those who love you.

O faraway one, my tears have drained into the soil,

And there taken shape as rain and torrents.

O stealer of our souls, gently! You have indeed

    Left me abject until death.

O absent from sight, your memory is present

In the heart, which seeks no substitute for you.

No wonder if, after you, I have lost my patience,

And my fortitude, reason, and understanding.

Cool my inward heart with a glance; perhaps it

Will quench our burning thirst after separation.

Rejoin a friend whose heart's last spark of life has gone,

Lest he be slain by your own hand.

    فأنا القتيل هوىً ولست قتيلا

    O you who kill me through rejection, my patience is far away;

For I am slain by passion, yet am not slain.

    فمحمدٌ لا يقبل التعذيلا

    O just one, be my reprover in blaming me;

    For Muḥammad accepts no reproach.

And leave off blame: I am indeed tormented.

No wonder if I have become lovesick and distraught

Through parting from one who left my heart wasted,

Through parting from one after whom I expect no

Protector among all creation and humankind.

That is the truly generous man; you will not find

Among people, certainly, his like or his equal.

Travel wherever you wish through the lands; you will not

Ever see his equal in all the worlds.

    He is my master, my defender and my supporter;

In every affair, I never find him weary.

Were I to sell myself to meet you, my master,

And all I possess, it would be little.

Alas! Time is lost, and I have found

No path to union with the one my heart loves.

O soul, be patient: what is decreed will happen

    Inevitably, though separation be grievous.

My thoughts return to you: where is your midday resting place?

For time is wretched as a dwelling and midday resting place.

Would that I knew where you are! Perhaps my heart

    Would accept drink and food.

With your distant journey you saddened loved ones,

And a company of people, paternal uncles and maternal uncles.

No wonder if, after you, these people have become

    Sharers in sorrow and wailing.

After ʿAbd Allāh, offspring of Mubārak, have I

Found a true friend, a companion, in this age?

    After him, every sweet thing has lost its sweetness;

Even time has grown long for me.

And I have wearied of life and its pleasures,

Until I have become sickly and wearisome.

O discerning one who persists in estrangement,

You traveled away from us, with no wish to return.

Tell your lovers, whom you have known

Bound by your love, where you wish to lodge.

Preserve affection for them, for they have preserved

Their affection for you; so shun all change.

    Hasten to us: we are bewildered;

We recognize neither the known nor the unknown.

How long this distance and proud reserve, which

Have given our bodies burning heat and lingering aftereffects?

And why this rejection and abandonment in

This world? Do not be heedless of reunion.

Revive the hearts dead from separation,

And pity servants wasted by your absence.

Your radiant qualities have revealed you; they

Adorned you, then became a guide to separation.

And you denied us the sight of you; would that we

Might behold your beauty—may you never lack favor.

And you left us stricken, without wine,

And I saddened gray-haired and middle-aged men through separation.
