تُوُفِّىَ بحرُ الجودِ والزهدِ والتقى

تُوُفِّىَ بحرُ الجودِ والزهدِ والتقى

ونورُ دياجينا علىُّ بن سالم

ونورُ دياجينا علىُّ بن سالم

The sea of generosity, asceticism, and piety has died,

And the light of our dark nights, Ali ibn Salim.

فتى خَلفِ الندبِ الهمام من الذي

فتى خَلفِ الندبِ الهمام من الذي

وقاهُ إلهُ العرشِ شرَّ المظالمِ

وقاهُ إلهُ العرشِ شرَّ المظالمِ

Son of Khalaf, the gallant and magnanimous, the one whom

The God of the Throne shielded from the evil of injustice.

تألم من فقدانِه ووَفَاتِه

تألم من فقدانِه ووَفَاتِه

جميعُ البرايا مِن جَهُول وعَالمِ

جميعُ البرايا مِن جَهُول وعَالمِ

His loss and his death brought grief

To all creation, ignorant and learned alike.

لقد كانَ فينَا للمُقِلِّتين مورداً

لقد كانَ فينَا للمُقِلِّتين مورداً

وإحسانهُ قد عمَّ كلَّ المَعَالمِ

وإحسانهُ قد عمَّ كلَّ المَعَالمِ

Indeed, among us he was a wellspring for the needy,

And his beneficence had encompassed every landmark.

ولكنْ قضاءُ اللهِ ما عنه مهربٌ

ولكنْ قضاءُ اللهِ ما عنه مهربٌ

فَمنْ منهُ مِن أحيائنا غيرُ سَالمِ

فَمنْ منهُ مِن أحيائنا غيرُ سَالمِ

And yet there is no escape from God's decree;

Who, then, among our living is not safe from it?

وفي شهر شعبان توافتْ وفاتُه

وفي شهر شعبان توافتْ وفاتُه

بتدبيرِ خلاَّقِ البريةِ حاكمِ

بتدبيرِ خلاَّقِ البريةِ حاكمِ

And his death came in the month of Sha‘ban,

By the ordering of creation's Maker, the Ruler.

مضتْ أربعٌ والعشرُ مع مائةٍ خَلَتْ

مضتْ أربعٌ والعشرُ مع مائةٍ خَلَتْ

وألفٌ تولى عدَّه كلُّ نَاظِمِ

وألفٌ تولى عدَّه كلُّ نَاظِمِ

Four and ten had passed, with a hundred elapsed,

And a thousand, whose reckoning every versifier undertook.

بعصرِ إمامِ المسلمين وليِّنا

بعصرِ إمامِ المسلمين وليِّنا

هو الشهم مولى عُرْبِها والأعاجِمِ

هو الشهم مولى عُرْبِها والأعاجِمِ

In the age of the Muslims' Imam, our guardian,

He, the noble-hearted lord of its Arabs and non-Arabs.

هُوَ العدلُ سيف نجل سلطان سيفنا

هُوَ العدلُ سيف نجل سلطان سيفنا

فتى مالك أهلُ الندى والمكارِمِ

فتى مالك أهلُ الندى والمكارِمِ

He is justice itself—Saif, son of Sultan, our sword,

A scion of Malik, worthy of bounty and noble deeds.

وناظمُ هذا المعولىُّ محمدٌ

وناظمُ هذا المعولىُّ محمدٌ

سلالةُ عبدِ اللهِ نجل المُسَالمِ

سلالةُ عبدِ اللهِ نجل المُسَالمِ

And the composer of this is Muhammad al-Ma‘wali,

Offspring of Abd Allah, son of al-Musalim.

ويومَئذٍ فهُو ابن سبعين حجةً

ويومَئذٍ فهُو ابن سبعين حجةً

وعشرٌ توافتْ في المدَى المُتَقَادِمِ

وعشرٌ توافتْ في المدَى المُتَقَادِمِ

And on that day he was seventy years of age,

And ten more had elapsed in the long passage of time.

وصلِّ على خيرِ الأنام محمدِ

وصلِّ على خيرِ الأنام محمدِ

نبيِّ الهدَى الزاكِي سليلِ الضراغِمِ

نبيِّ الهدَى الزاكِي سليلِ الضراغِمِ

And bless the best of creation, Muhammad,

The pure Prophet of guidance, a scion of lions.
