A greeting that consoles the careworn heart,

And cures the ailing patient's disease,

And is more delectable than blended wine,

And sweeter than honey and ginger.

It puts the scent of fragrant breezes to shame,

And is sweeter to taste than Salsabil.

It banishes the sorrowful lover's cares,

Bringing refreshment and cooling thirst's burning heat.

And folds away the lovesick one's sorrows,

And makes a friend forget reunion with his friend.

I address it especially to the esteemed governor,

Bashir, sworn companion of lavish giving,

Scion of the loyal, pure-hearted, gallant man,

    Muhammad, the magnanimous giver.

    Generous, generous in bestowing gifts,

Yet he is miserly with lofty honors.

Succor to orphans and a lion in battle,

Praiseworthy in his endeavors, and succor to the guest.

When a supplicant arrives in his courtyard,

He will not be content to give him little.

And if you seek alliance with him,

Then what a fine supporter and what a fine guarantor!

He is justice itself in every matter he considers,

And in all creation he has no equal.

And even if people forget his kindness,

I am not one to forget his favors.

And I am steadfast in my covenant with him,

Remaining so, even should I live a long life.

And even if I turn away from everything in sight,

My heart will not turn away from love for him.

So, O son of eminence and glory, and you

By whose kindness poverty lies slain:

My affection for you lies hidden in my breast,

And I have no path to reunion with you.

I have been a stranger since I parted from you,

And every stranger is lonely and abased.

For no departed beloved has stirred my heart,

Nor has a barren hill roused my longing since then.

But I am distraught with longing for you,

So my heart is with me, and my body is gaunt.

So you have left me sorrow's sworn companion,

And my tears flow across my cheek's expanse.
