    وإن أدبرتْ لم تَرْتِبط بالسلاسلِ

    When worldly fortune comes, it can be led by a hair;

And if it turns away, it cannot be bound with chains.

Have you not seen Bal‘arab the Ya‘rubi,

A scion of Sultan bin Sayf of mighty deeds?

He is the king, the sultan, in the east and west,

A monarch to whom the heads of the tribes bow.

Yet his buildings did not protect him when fortune turned away,

Nor did he benefit from the poised, neighing steeds.

Time’s vicissitudes folded him utterly away, and so

His dwellings became dust-covered, like trackless wastes.

Take heed, then, my friend, if you are wise,

And be wary of what remains, never heedless.
