And I said to him, 'Meeting you is the best solace,

When you are cheerful and your body grows supple.

And come, give me a drink of the wine of your mouth; it is

Lawful in itself—no bishops have touched it.'

So he leaned close, with a mouth like pearls neatly strung,

And gave us freely from what his lips held.

I grew drunk on it—pure, choice wine, whose admixture

Was powdered, fragrant musk in double measure.

And when we entreated one another and our reproaches grew long,

Tears flowed that our silken cloaks could not escape.

So I said tearfully, 'Why this weeping?'

He said, 'My weeping fears parting from you.'

I said, 'Do you weep at reunion and in separation?'

He said, 'Each of the two states holds deadly perils.'

I said, 'Then is there any respite?' He told me, 'No—

I see no respite except for one who lives in harmony.'

    فكيفَ به إذْ كان وهْو مخالِفُ

    Hardships are many, even when the beloved is obliging;

How, then, is it with him when he is unwilling?

For whoever loves or is loved is tormented,

And sorrow and fears never cease to overtake him.

For none has done us ill or inflicted harm on us,

Among humankind, except those we see and befriend.

For I have found distance a blessing for one who withdraws

From people, or one whom familiar haunts have not wearied.

Let us live on lofty summits, alone, affirming God's oneness,

Solitary, with no caller crying out at your dwelling.

May you behold the Gardens of Eden, keeping company

There with the houris, where lofty heights enfold you.

And hasten toward good deeds from every direction,

And be prudent: favors will be bestowed upon you.

    فإن لم تباشرْها فإنك آسفُ

    And act when, in the course of time, an opportunity comes your way;

For if you do not act on it, you will be regretful.
