تُسْلِىcomforts القلوبَthe hearts وتجلبُّand brings الأفراحاjoys
After separation, there must be a visit
After hardship, relief must come
That comforts hearts and brings joy,
To gladden hearts and bring joy
وتزيلُand removes عنfrom أحشائناour innards وَصَبَpain القَذَىirritating grit
وتُشَرِّدُand drives away الأحزانsorrows والأتراحاand griefs
And removes from our innards the pain of grit,
To banish grief from our souls
And drives away sorrows and griefs,
And scatter sorrows far away
وتبثُّand discloses ماwhat يعرَىafflicts القلوبَthe hearts منof الأذَىharm
وتبوحُand speaks openly بالسرِّof the secret الذيthat هوit باحاhas come to light
And discloses the hurt that afflicts the hearts,
To soothe the hurt felt in hearts
And speaks openly of the secret that has come to light.
And reveal secrets once concealed
إنindeed الحبيبَthe lover إذاwhen خلاis alone بحبيبِهwith his beloved
لابدَّit is necessary أنthat يتداولُواthey pass around الأقداحاthe cups
Indeed, when a lover is alone with his beloved,
When lovers meet alone, my friend
They must pass the cups between them.
Goblets of wine must be revealed

لاnot يسأمونthey grow weary عشيةًin the evening وصباحاand in the morning
This one drinks again, and that one takes a first draught in turn;
One narrates, the other drinks
They never tire, evening and morning.
Tireless, night and day the same

للقلبfor the heart كنbe للقائناfor our meeting مرتاحاat ease
So, to me, divulging secrets is a comfort
To share my secrets is relief
For the heart; be at ease about our meeting.
To my heart, so bless our meeting
إنيindeed, I لأبغضُsurely detest مَنwhoever يسلمِّentrusts أمرهhis affairs
لعدوِّهto his enemy ويعيبُهand blames him إنif باحاhe divulges
I truly detest whoever entrusts his affairs
I hate who submits to his foe
To his enemy, and blames him if he divulges them.
And faults him if he speaks the truth
