Acquire knowledge in earnest, O youth of Umar,

and do not abandon its lessons as long as you are young.

For knowledge is easy when you are young,

and not easy when you are old.

    Knowledge is more enduring in its benefit to young men;

their instruction has indeed been like engraving in stone.

And indeed, knowledge contains good manners and a reminder

for the heedless, and a reminder for one who takes heed,

and a lesson, admonitions, and then benefit

for those who ask, and thoughts for one who reflects.

Their slave attains the rank of free men

through knowledge, and the free man becomes nobler in rank.

I have advised you; hold fast to the counsel of a young man,

caring and compassionate, pure of any taint.

    وفرَّ عنهم وكن مِنهم عَلَى حَذَرِ

    So do not sit with petty folk of evil, my son;

flee from them, and be on your guard against them.

nor sit with one who talks much, given to idle babble.

and evil company, to me, is the greatest harm.

I am trustworthy, sincere in affection, and full of love,

a teacher and guide for you; listen to what I tell you.

I single out for counsel one whose company is welcome to us:

by that I mean Sulayman, a youth who takes heed.

Be silent and thoughtful in the mosques,

reciting the remembrance, the verses, and the surahs in measured tones.

Indeed, the son of Adam is created from clay.

Do not preoccupy your heart with this world and its finery,

for whoever pursues it is in danger from it.

It is the deceiver; do not let its outward appearance deceive you.

And none choose it but the deluded.

    تَلْق السرورَ بجناتٍ على سُررِ

    Turn your cares toward the hereafter, and be wary;

you will find joy in gardens, upon couches.

Do not oppose him in speech or in deed,

nor oppose him; beware the onslaught of arrogance.

for all who come from nomadic or settled communities.

the compassionate father well known in tradition.

and if he pelts you with foul speech, endure patiently.

Be content with God's decree, mindful of its lessons,

in benefit and harm, in poverty and ease.

If you love, do not overpraise on that account; and if

you hate, love and hatred should be kept within measure.

keep company with a worthy person if you undertake a journey.

So may you endure, live, and remain in goodness and well-being,
