Our elders, your loss is great,

and your patience before the great calamity is immense.

For you are firmly rooted mountains,

when minds grow flighty amid battle.

    أجلْ أنَّي يحرككم نسيمُ

    Weighty—no winds can move you;

indeed, how could a breeze move you?

Yours are resolve and sturdy hearts,

which noble character adorns in you.

So I do not tell you, "Patience," but rather

I tell you: for it, you have a great reward.

    يدلُّ عليكمُ الكرمُ القديمُ

    And you are foremost in every virtue;

    long-standing generosity points to you.

    وطفلكمُ كشيخكمُ حليمُ

    And you are masters of all kings;

and your child, like your elder, is forbearing.

All things are safe if you are safe,

for all humankind is safe through you.

And you are suns on the summits of glory,

life for humankind—live on and endure.

And live for ages, O you of praiseworthy eminence,

young man, our sultan—you are the wise one.

So in this life, honor and might are yours,

and in the next, an enduring triumph is yours.

So do not grieve over what has passed, and call upon

God, for He is merciful to you.

If you do not expect the departed to return,

then why grief over him, and worries?

So expect no permanence from this world,

for nothing in this world endures.

Consolation to you, O son of Sultan ibn Saif,

for the one who has died, while you remain with us.

All who walk upon it will pass away,

and no creature remains there forever.

So everyone must perish one day, without escape,

and His face endures—that of the mighty Lord.

And be like your brother Saif, of lofty distinction:

a lion whom wounds do not frighten.

Nor does prosperity puff him up into tyranny,

nor do any worries hover around him.

Nor does the burial of [unclear word] alarm him,

nor that of the nearer one, even if the forbearing man dies.

He is the chieftain, extremely fierce in his onslaught,

when chieftains bow to his might.

For all people are your dependents,

[Unclear wording: a group, with the inclining one], so that they may become upright.

And give generously to the dependents with what you have,

for through your generosity, the traces come to life.

    لعمري إن مربعها وخيمُ

    For this world is not deemed an abode of eternity;

by my life, its dwelling place is indeed unwholesome.

It is impossible for life in it to be sweet,

and its habit is to sleep, yet grant no sleep.

Such is the world: its inward aspect is ugly,

and its outward aspect is fair to whoever sees it.

It is bitter brine that turns to poison

for whoever drinks its water—and people are thirst-crazed.

So if you are a wanderer, take heed,

and take from it as the weaned child took.

Consolation, hope of divine reward, and steadfast endurance,

for patience stands firm amid great calamity.

And offer our imam a special greeting of peace from us,

the imam of the Muslims—he is the learned one.
