    وأشهى من الماء الزلالِ وأعذبُ

    A greeting like the scent of musk—indeed, it is more fragrant;

    And more delectable than crystal-clear water, and sweeter;

    وأعذب من رِيقِ الحبيبِ وأطيبُ

    And sweeter than honey mingled with limpid water;

    And sweeter than the beloved’s saliva, and more delightful.

    Its fragrance surpasses the scent of aromatic plants,

    And puts the scent of aloeswood to shame when it is turned.

    It consoles the hearts of the lovesick with its beauty,

    And dispels sorrows whenever it is voiced.

    And if its words are recited in gatherings,

    They restore child, middle-aged man, and gray-haired elder to health.

    It contains meaningful expressions, as though they were

    Necklaces of ruby—indeed, they are more wondrous.

    وحَنَّ إلى وادى العَقيق مُعَذَّبُ

    And gracious praise, as long as rainclouds pour in torrents,

    And one in torment longs for the valley of al-ʿAqiq;

    And the mention of greetings that renew what has passed

    Of affection and tender concern that is never effaced.

    فَتى ماجدٌ ندبٌ شجاعٌ مُجرِّبُ

    With it I single out Muhammad, the virtuous and generous,

    A noble youth, gallant, brave, and experienced;

    هو المرتضى في كل قلبٍ محبَّبُ

    A man of virtue, kindness, good cheer, and contentment;

    He is the favored one, beloved in every heart.

    And it was fitting that we should visit your dwellings,

    Making our way on our heads, not riding upon camels.

    And you wish us to walk barefoot to visit you,

    But a wilderness and a barren plain stand in the way of that.

    May the fates never lower your standing, nor

    May we mention you except in refined praise.
