    إن شُبْهَتْ ظُلِمَتْ ببَدْرِ تمَامِ

    A fair, graceful maiden, her collarbones radiant;

If compared to a full moon, she is wronged.

The dream-phantom heard of her; I imagined her brow

A sun glittering beneath the wing of darkness.

She spent the night voicing loving reproaches to me,

And dispensing cups of wine from her mouth.

She said to me, “Will you not have pure wine

That heals you of anguish and pain?”

Far be it from one like me to commit a forbidden deed.

The tears of 'Urwah ibn Hizam's eyes.

I am found chaste, for I am not among those who, when alone

With a virgin, trail the skirts of sin.

Virgins have visited me and found me

Free from sin in my waking and my sleep.

So it is as though I learn from the chastity

Of the lofty king, the mighty lord,

Possessor of excellence, Sultan ibn Sayf, the bountiful,

Virtuous and honored through the course of days,

    وذِى الدِّينِ والإيمانِ والإسلامِ

    Al-Ya'rubi, the resolute, the approved,

    And possessed of religion, faith, and Islam;

The valiant, just, noble, glorious one,

    Deft, unyielding, lionlike, exalted.

Kings shrink before him in awe,

    And you see them neither fleeing nor advancing;

They long to kiss his sandal and his carpet,

And so remain standing on their feet.

A king who fells whomever he wills with his sword,

Keen-edged, while every sharp sword rebounds from him.

Were he content with wit in the dust of battle,

It would suffice him for killing, instead of the cleaving sword.

Master of generosity, eloquence, and wisdom,

Of goodness and highest excellence, a father to orphans.

Without him, no man would know how to give,

And thrust into entrails and strike heads.

    أو سارَ حلَّ القتلُ في الأجْسَامِ

    If he halts, plunder falls upon his riches;

Or if he marches, killing falls upon bodies.

    يُعْطيك مبتئاً بغير كلامِ

    If you come to him seeking bounty, do not declare your need to him;

He gives to you unprompted, without a word.

If you say he is like the encircling sea, you wrong him

In his generosity—or call him a downpour from clouds.

Far be it for Ibn Sayf to be matched by mankind,

Or for the noblest of nobles to resemble him.

Peer throughout the ages of the years.

Nay, destroyer of enemies and destitution!

O you who stand alone in courage and lavish gifts,

O you who put idol-worship to death,

O you who, when battle grows fierce and death runs rampant,

Meet armies with a radiant, ever-smiling face.

I have called upon you; answer my call,

O pinnacle of reverence and exaltation.

Rain down upon me clouds of silver

From fingertips pouring forth like seas.

I swear: you have never turned a poor man away disappointed,

And in battle you repel every mighty host.

And you have come to lend your ears to delegations,

And deafen them rather than obey reproachers.

From a people who all held sway over creation,

You are the hero and refuge of every hero.

Hold back! You have surpassed the furthest limit

In bounty, martial might, and honoring others.

I have strewn upon you the pearls of necklaces,

Which put all pearls and their strings to shame.

Take it, free of deceit and linguistic

Errors, for it has come to the finest imam.

It emulated al-Buhturi's verse in smoothness,

And the peerless Ibn al-Husayn in precision.

Both its meanings and the excellence of its wording

Are from the poetry of Abu Tammam, master of meaning.

So let this age rejoice that you are immortal,

O Kaaba of princes and rulers.

So may our Lord's mercy be upon you for all time,

And upon you a thousand greetings and peace.
