يا سيدي قل لهم إني أخو حَزَنِ
My tears flowed the day the tribe departed from Iḍam.
O my master, tell them I am a brother to sorrow.

O my burning anguish! I am wearied by grief over her.
A night journey unfolded; I find no delight in drowsiness.

After the night journey, I gnashed my teeth in remorse.
Who will rescue me? Longing's secret is indeed out in the open.

Alas for my affliction when Layla fixed her gaze!
My heart raced; I am still, O friend, amid afflictions.

An ailment spread, so I bit my hand in remorse.
Who will guide me? My mind has strayed amid the heights of ruined campsites.

Alas for my sorrow! She denied me the sweetness of her visit.
Forevermore, I have no abode left in any homeland.

Sleep is elusive; the cord of my longing is unbroken.
Who will console me? My patience has ebbed, and my bough has shriveled.

What solace have I? My liver has melted at her desertion.
Thirst has grown; spare me reproach in my lifetime.

Apart from all others, I am forever a brother to pain.
O guided one, I am indeed in weakness and frailty.
