ثلاثٌ حِلّى للرجالِ فَهَاكِهَا
تلوحshine بسطرin a line الطِّرْسthe page كالبدرlike the full moon فيin الدُّجَىthe darkness
تلوح بسطر الطِّرْس كالبدر في الدُّجَى
Three adornments for men—so take them.
Three ornaments for men, and here are their fruits
They shine in a line on the page like the full moon in darkness.
Shining like the moon behind her veil’s fine lace
مكارمُnoble qualities أخلاقٍof character وبِشْرٌand cheerfulness يزينُهُadorns him
مكارمُ أخلاقٍ وبِشْرٌ يزينُهُ
معwith الناسpeople محمودٌpraiseworthy وثالثهاand the third of them الحجىwisdom
مع الناس محمودٌ وثالثها الحجى
Noble character, and cheerfulness that adorns him—
Good morals and cheerful face that grace
Praiseworthy among people—and the third is wisdom.
His name praised by all, and thirdly his sage
