Whoever God stretches a finger over—
He whose finger God extends
with good or evil, whichever he is drawn to—
With good or evil, with which besotted
يَملَأhe fills لَهُfor him مِنهُfrom it ذَنوباًa bucket مُترَعاfilled to the brim

He fills him a bucket of it to the brim.
Fills for him sins overflowing
And he had annihilated Iram and Tubbaʿ,
And He destroyed Iram and Tubba
وَقَومَand the people of لُقمانَLuqmān بنِson of عادٍʿĀd أَخشَعاhe humbled

And humbled the people of Luqmān, son of ʿĀd,
And the people of Luqman ibn Ad, humbled
When they wrestled with him, he refused to be thrown down.
When they battled him, but he refused to be vanquished
وَالفيلَand the elephant يَومَon the day of عُرَناتٍʿUranāt كَعكَعاhe drove back

إِذwhen أَزمَعَresolved العُجمُthe foreigners بِهِwith it ماwhat أَزمَعاthey resolved
And drove the elephant back on the day of ʿUranāt,
And the elephant the day of companions confounded
When the foreigners planned with it what they planned.
When the non-Arabs against it conspired
نادىcalled out مُنادٍa caller رَبَّهُhis Lord فَأَسمَعاso he made himself heard

فَذَبَّso he defended عَنfrom بِلادِهِhis lands وَوَرَّعاand drove them back
A caller cried to his Lord and made himself heard;
A caller called his Lord, who heard
So he defended his lands and drove them back,
So it avoided its lands cautious
وَحابَسَand he held back الحاسِرَthe bareheaded man وَالمُقَنَّعاand the helmeted man

And held back the bareheaded and the helmeted.
And the guardsman and the masked confounded
And the army escaped in disgrace, sorely hurt,
And the army escaped in grievous defeat

أَنتَyou جَعَلتَyou made الباهِلِيَّthe Bāhilī man مِفنَعاa wealthy man
Their rear ranks spewing blood in gushes.
Their latter ones blood spurting
You made the Bāhilī a man of wealth
You made the ignorant victorious

وَحَقُّand it is the right of مَنone whom رَفَعتَهُyou have exalted him أَنthat يُرفَعاhe be exalted
Among us, so he became noble and unassailable.
Among us so he became glorified, fortified
And one you have exalted has the right to be exalted.
And the right of whom you raise is to be raised
وَكانَand he was شَيخاًan old man باهِلِيّاًa Bāhilī أَضلَعاbent

He had been a bent old man of Bāhila,
He was an ignorant old man, seasoned
Unable to mend a sandal when its thong broke.
Who knew not shoes when walked barefoot
فَاليَومَso today قَدindeed نالَhe has attained خِلالاًqualities أَربَعاfour
عِزّاًmight وَمَجداًand glory وَغِنىًand wealth وَمَفزَعاand a refuge
So today he has attained four qualities:
Yet today he attained four prizes
Might, glory, wealth, and a refuge.
Glory, honor, wealth, and refuge
فَماso whatever يَنَلhe gains فَماthen not نَراهُwe see him ضَيَّعاsquandered it
So whatever he gains, we do not see him squander it.
So what you grant is not lost
