The ruins told nothing of their people.

Years had passed since their remembered days.

Nothing there offers an answer to the

inquirer, save wild-ox calves and ostrich chicks,

and white antelopes stretching up to browse, dwelling in the

watercourses, some alone and others in herds.

And a dark, grim-faced one pursues she-asses not carrying young,

an Akhdari wild ass, scarred and loud-braying.

And a reed-slender wild cow seeks at Harbah a remembered trace

of a bleating calf whom ruin had pursued.

She searched his last-known place; the night had been spent over him

between Falj and al-Lawdh, by fierce gray wolves.

So she sought him among the two sand tracts for three days,

each day with anguish in her breast.

Then she found a bloodstain, after despair,

and a hide, with limbs still attached to part of it.
