الكَلبُ وَالشاعِرُ في مَنزِلٍ
فَلَيتَso, would that أَنّيthat I لَمdid not أَكُنbe شاعِراa poet
فَلَيتَ أَنّي لَم أَكُن شاعِرا
The dog and the poet share the same station.
The dog and the poet in a house
So would that I had never been a poet!
If only I were not a poet

Is he anything but one who holds out his hand,
Is he not but one with palms outstretched
Begging food from those who come and go?
Seeking alms from all who come and go
