وَحَيَّتنا سُفَيرَةُ وَالغَيامُ
Our land wept for us when we departed,
Our land wept when we were estranged
And Sufayrah and al-Ghayam greeted us.
And our greeting was carried by the messenger clouds
مَحَلُّencampment الحَيِّthe clan إِذwhen أَمسَواthey spent the evening جَميعاًall together

فَأَمسى اليَومَ لَيسَ بِهِ أَنامُ
The clan's camp, where once they were all together at evening,
The abode of the living when they all passed away
Today stands with not a soul within.
Today there is no one left in it to sleep

We disdained that Suda' should settle there,
We refused that an echo would resound in it
And Nahd, after the sacred month had ended.
After the sacred months had elapsed

And had they reached the clan of Banu Jariyy
If the living ones of Banu Jari
And Taym al-Lat, the young livestock would have been frightened off,
And Taiym Al-Lat had sensed, the white camels would have been saddled

With every nimble mare and powerfully built, lean-flanked horse,
With every heap of ashes and every deep sigh
Whose bit blunts the sharp edges of its last-grown tooth,
The twilight of the fierce fighter disappears

And every straightened, supple spear and keen-edged sword,
And every cultured, gentle and hot-tempered person
On whose cutting edges poisons are sprinkled.
His arrows are scattered over his tent

The withered tamarisk branches are broken away from them
Breaking off from it the branches of Tarfa
By the massed camels beside Suwayqah.
Next to the rest stop, the soft sands piled up
