Indeed, Aban was sweet even while unripe,

Filled with years, and granted yet more years.

And one day he gained kinship by marriage with Yaksum.

A tawny lion when the forelocks were dust-grey,

And the horses cleft the murky, swirling dust.

He remained ten beyond the three.

And surely in al-Qassim there is remembrance of him:

Had he obeyed the chiefs then, he would have fled.

But he disobeyed them out of duty and honour.

He spent the night, and they their pitch-dark night,

Listening warily for barking, dishevelled and dust-grey,

Like devout women awaiting the votive offering.

Until, when morning split open the dawn,

    It cast off robes, an ample cloak;

Then they were scattered far and wide over the grazing herds,

And left no wrong against Kilab unavenged.
