Have you not stopped at the deserted camp remains,

    Salma's, at al-Madhanib and al-Qufal,

On either side of Saw'ar and the slopes of Qaww,

Enduring, giving no hint of disappearance?

Their people departed, save for ostrich cries

And the jinn's piping, where tribes once camped,

And a string of red-shanked ostriches gathered together,

Their chicks like gray camel calves.

Their people departed; there were fashioned anew

The summer wild cows' pavilions of shade.

I stood beside them until my companions said,

"You have given way to grief; this is not fitting."

As though his tears were two great irrigators' buckets,

Pouring brimming bucket after brimming bucket.

When they have watered crops and fresh-cut fodder,

They turn them toward tall, supple palms.

You wish to meet the people of Salma

At Khatmah—but wishes are paths of error.

And should one like you pine over dwellings

    Effaced between Tukhtim and al-Khilal?

Whenever worries used to beset me,

And a beloved grew grudging after union,

I severed her bonds and turned away from her

On a swift she-camel too strong for fatigue:

Massive, bounding in a rolling gait,

Worn lean by my halts and journeys,

Like the palace of a man of Hajar when he builds it

With matching blocks hewn to a pattern.

Like a snub-nosed wild bull, ranging alone, rained upon

One night on the stony ground of Wahif.

He lost his herd, and there visited him by night

A dripping cloud under the north wind's command.

He spent the night like a man fulfilling vows,

Sheltering by wet boxthorn and wild lote.

Whenever branches dripped upon his back,

He turned his horn time after time,

Like a smith bending over his hands,

Stooping to inspect the sockets of arrowheads.

At sunrise droop-eared hounds came early upon him,

Their trained hunters trotting beside the men.

    He wheeled—not from cowardice, but

As a man of honor advances to do battle.

He left a mangled hound; the others swerved away,

After he had dyed their flanks with blood from a spleen.

He skewers their sides with sideways horn-thrusts,

As a stitching awl passes through patched soles.

He turned away, the perils falling from him,

Like a caparisoned racehorse speeding past.

He turned, heading toward the reaches of Falj,

Alternately sparing and spending his strength.

    His forelegs cleave al-Dahna's thickets,

As a gambler plays at fiyal in the sand.

At dawn he ranged the open plains alone,

    Like a sword-blade newly polished.

Is it that one, or a grim-faced Iraqi wild ass,

Braying over lean she-asses thin as gaming-sticks?

He drove their foals off on Qaww's barren ground,

A herdmate not blamed for breaking company.

He gave them free range in al-Sulbayn until

The pregnant could be told apart from the barren,

Through summer's months; then failed him

Al-Shayyitayn's scant waters, reduced to dregs.

He reminded them of stagnant watering places

At Hajah, which drawing-buckets cannot drain.

He turned them toward the uplands; they were urged on by

    Their necks, like a distance-shooter's bare arrow-shafts.

Toward a watering before which the lowlands recede,

Farther than a full five-day desert march.

He renews his braying and varies its tones,

Following them, swaying in a lively trot.

His braying is like the lament of a chief

Who fears raiding parties and assassination,

Like the sobbing of a drinker visited by night

By aged Babylonian wine kept in jars.

He recalled his grief, and was tossed about

By wine mingled with fresh, clear water.

When they bunched and he hemmed in both their flanks,

And brought them to water on long, curved legs,

They raised a dust-pavilion on a windy day,

    Flapping now aslant, now upright.

He brought them jostling to water, not driving them off,

Nor fearing that crowding would spoil their drinking.

With his hooves he clears space from a rival drinker,

Terrifying the hearts of thirsty, hollow-bellied beasts.

He sends echoes among the cairns with thin, piercing notes,

That cleave the breast like shafts of long spears.

O friend, do you see a flash that flared late at night,

Like a kindled lamp shining among its wicks?

I lay awake for it; it rose aloft after a spell of quiet,

While my companions rested upon their saddle-forks.

Its low clouds gleam amid the rainclouds like Abyssinians,

Standing with javelins and broad-headed spears.

As though women clapping their palms stood on its crests,

And mourning bands with mourning-cloths upon them.

It rose high among the low clouds, driving piebald beasts,

    Deep-bellied, shielding their young.

By morning it lay anchored at Dahr's piled rocks,

And the thickets among the sands streamed with its rain.

It brought Sahah's wild beasts down from their peaks,

As though its ibex were dusky camels.

Its right flank lay over al-A'rad,

Its left over the twin hills of Uthal.

Al-Milhayn's raincloud followed with a downpour,

    Swift-falling, its waterskin-spouts running freely.

All night the flood mounted both its sides,

    From al-Baqqar, like massive pillars.

I say, though its downpour is far from me,

Bringing shath shrubs down from the mountain peaks:

"May it water my people, Banu Majd, and give drink

To Numayr and the tribes of Hilal.

May they graze it in spring and summer there,

Without plague, O Sumayy, or calamity."

They are my people, yet I condemn in them

Traits they have taken in place of my own.

The innocent is raided though he has done no wrong,

And the man of trust and dignity is disgraced.

Every base wretch hastens into shameful deeds,

    Dragging disgrace behind him, heedless.

You obeyed his command and followed him,

While he pursues error, his tether snapped.
