وَلاand not مَخالِجُهُhis cares المَخلوجَةُscattered الكُثُرُmany
You deem much to be little when you ask him for it,
Yet not his many scattered cares.
ياO أَسمَAsma صَبراًbe patient عَلىwith ماwhatever كانَhas happened مِنof حَدَثٍmisfortune
إِنَّindeed الحَوادِثَmisfortunes مَلقِيٌّencountered وَمُنتَظَرُand awaited
O Asma, be patient with whatever misfortune has befallen;
For some misfortunes are already faced, and others still awaited.
صَبراًbe patient عَلىwith حَدَثانِthe calamities الدَهرِof time وَاِنقَبِضيand withdraw
عَنِfrom الدَناءَةِbaseness إِنَّindeed الحُرَّthe noble person يَصطَبِرُendures patiently
Be patient with time’s calamities, and turn away
From baseness: the noble person endures.
وَلاand do not تَبيتَنَّever spend the night ذاburdened with هَمٍّworry تُكابِدُهُyou struggle with it
كَأَنَّماas though النارُthe fire فيin الأَحشاءِthe entrails تَستَعِرُblazes
And never spend the night wrestling with a worry,
As though fire were blazing in your entrails.
فَماso whatever رُزِقتَyou are granted فَإِنَّthen indeed اللَهَGod جالِبُهُits bringer
وَماand whatever حُرِمتَyou are denied فَماthen it is what يَجريruns its course بِهِwith it القَدَرُdestiny
For whatever you are granted, it is God who brings it;
And whatever you are denied is what destiny decrees.
نَعلوهُمُwe strike them from above كُلَّماwhenever يَنميgrows لَهُمof theirs سَلَفٌa vanguard
بِالمَشرَفِيِّwith the Mashrafi sword وَلَولاand were it not for ذاكَthat قَدalready أَمِرواthey grew numerous
We strike them whenever a vanguard of theirs grows,
With the Mashrafi sword; but for that, they would have multiplied.
