أَتَيتُI came أَباAbu (father of) هِندٍHind بِهِندٍwith Hind وَمالِكاًand Malik
بِأَسماءَwith Asma إِنّيindeed I مِنamong حُماةِdefenders of الحَقائِقِinviolable rights
I came to Abu Hind with Hind, and to Malik
with Asma; I am among the defenders of inviolable rights.
دَعَتنيshe called me وَفاضَتand overflowed عَينُهاher eye بِخَدورَةٍat Khadurah
فَجِئتُso I came غِشاشاًin haste إِذwhen دَعَتcalled أُمُّUmm (mother of) طارِقِTariq
She called me at Khadurah, her eye brimming over;
so I came in haste when Umm Tariq called.
وَأَعدَدتُand I readied مَأثوراًa patterned sword قَليلاًlittle حُشورُهُits edge-wear
شَديدَstrong in العِمادِthe spine يَنتَحيstrikes لِلطَرائِقِat armor's layers
And I readied a patterned sword, its edge little worn,
strong-backed, striking at armor's layers;
وَأَخلَقَand a well-worn weapon مَحموداًmuch praised نَجيحاًeffective رَجيعُهُits response
وَأَسمَرَand a brown spear مَرهوباًdreaded كَريمَnoble in المَآزِقِbattle's straits
and a well-worn, much-praised weapon, effective in its response,
and a dreaded brown spear, noble in battle's straits.
وَخَلَّفتُand I left behind ثَمَّthere عامِراًAmir وَاِبنَand Ibn (son of) عامِرٍAmir
وَعَمراًand Amr وَماand not مِنّيfor me بَديلٌa substitute بِعاتِقِfree
And there I left Amir and Ibn Amir,
and Amr; no substitute for me is free.
وَمِنّيand from me عَلىupon السُبّاقِthe foremost فَضلٌbounty وَنِعمَةٌand favor
كَماjust as نَعَشَrevived الدَكداكَthe level sands صَوبُthe downpour of البَوارِقِlightning clouds
And the foremost receive bounty and favor from me,
as rain from lightning clouds revives the level sands.
وَقُلتُand I said لِعَمريby my life كَيفَhow يُترَكُis abandoned مَرثَدٌMarthad
وَعَمرٌand Amr وَيَسريand passes مالُناour wealth فيamong الأَفارِقِthe scattered bands
And I said, by my life, how can Marthad be abandoned,
and Amr, while our wealth passes among scattered bands?
فَلَولاso, were it not for اِحتِياليmy resourcefulness فيin الأُمورِaffairs وَمِرَّتيand my resolve
لَبيعَwould surely have been sold سُبِيٌّa captive بِالشَوِيِّfor sheep النَوافِقِthe dying
But for my resourcefulness in affairs and my resolve,
a captive would have been sold for dying sheep.
فَذاكَso that دِفاعٌa defense عَنof ذِمارِthe honor of أَبيكُمُyour father
إِذاwhen خَرَقَtore through السِربالَthe tunic حَدُّthe sharp points of المَرافِقِthe elbows
So that is a defense of your father's honor,
when sharp elbow-points tear through the tunic.
