مَنwhoever كانَwas مِنّيof me جاهِلاًignorant أَوor مُغَمَّراًinexperienced
فَماso not كانَwas بِدعاًsomething unprecedented مِنamong بَلائِيَmy proven service عامِرُʿAmir
Whoever knows me not, or is inexperienced—
ʿAmir was no stranger to my proven service.
I kept close to you حَتّىuntil أَخمَرَharbored القَومُthe people ظِنَّةًsuspicion
عَلَيَّagainst me بَنوthe sons of أُمِّthe mother of البَنينَthe sons الأَكابِرُthe eminent ones
I stood by you until the people nursed suspicion
against me—the great sons of Umm al-Banin.
وَدافَعتُand I warded off عَنكَfrom you الصيدَthe proud chiefs مِنfrom آلِthe house of دارِمٍDarim
وَمِنهُمand among them قَبيلٌa clan فيin السُرادِقِthe pavilion فاخِرُboasting
And I warded off from you the proud chiefs of Darim's house,
among them a clan boasting in the pavilion:
فُقَيمٌFuqaym وَعَبدُand ʿAbd اللَهِAllah فيin عِزِّthe might of نَهشَلٍNahshal
بِثَيتَلَat Thaytal كُلٌّall حاضِرٌpresent مُتَناصِرُsupporting one another
Fuqaym and ʿAbd Allah, backed by Nahshal's might,
at Thaytal, all assembled and supporting one another.
فَذُدتُso I drove back مَعَدّاًMaʿadd وَالعِبادَand al-ʿIbad وَطَيِّئاًand Tayyiʾ
وَكَلباًand Kalb كَماas ذيدَwere driven back الخِماسُcamels watering every fifth day البَواكِرُarriving early
So I drove back Maʿadd, al-ʿIbad, and Tayyiʾ,
and Kalb, like camels driven back from their early, fifth-day watering,
عَلىat حينَa time when مَنwhoever تَلبَثis delayed عَلَيهِfor him ذَنوبُهُhis water-bucket
يَجِدfeels فَقدَهاits loss وَفيand among الذِنابِthe water-buckets تَداثُرُjostling
at a time when a man whose bucket is delayed
feels its loss, while men jostle over buckets.
وَسُقتُand I drove رَبيعاًRabiʿ بِالفَناءِin the courtyard كَأَنَّهُas though he were
قَريعُa choice sire of هِجانٍpurebred white camels يَبتَغيseeking مَنsomeone who يُخاطِرُwill contend
And I drove Rabiʿ before me in the courtyard, as though he were
a choice sire of purebred white camels, seeking a challenger.
فَأَفحَمتُهُso I silenced him حَتّىuntil اِستَكانَhe submitted كَأَنَّهُas though he were
قَريحُone stricken with سُلالٍconsumption يَكتَفُshortens المَشيَhis stride فاتِرُfeeble
Then I silenced him until he submitted, as though he were
one stricken with consumption, weakly shortening his stride.
وَيَومَand on the day ظَعَنتُمyou departed فَاِصمَعَدَّتso pressed onward وُفودُكُمyour delegations
بِأَجمادِat the stony uplands of فاثورٍFathur كَريمٌnoble مُصابِرُsteadfast
And on the day you departed and your delegations pressed onward,
at Fathur's stony uplands, I was noble and steadfast.
وَيَومَand on the day مَنَعتُI kept الحَيَّthe clan أَنfrom يَتَفَرَّقواscattering
بِنَجرانَat Najran فَقريmy hardship ذَلِكَthat اليَومَday فاقِرُback-breaking
And on the day I kept the clan from scattering
at Najran—my hardship that day was back-breaking.
وَيَوماًand on a day بِصَحراءِon the plain of الغَبيطِal-Ghabit وَشاهِديand my witnesses الthe
مُلوكُkings وَأَردافُand deputies of المُلوكِthe kings العَراعِرُthe mighty lords
And a day on al-Ghabit's plain, my witnesses the
kings and the kings' mighty deputies.
وَفيand on كُلِّevery يَومٍday ذيmarked by حِفاظٍdefense of honor بَلَوتَنيyou tested me
فَقُمتُso I stood مَقاماًin a position لَمdid not تَقُمهُoccupy it العَواوِرُthe weaklings
And on every day when honor was at stake, you tested me;
I took a stand that weaklings never took.
لِيَmine is النَصرُthe support مِنهُمfrom them وَالوَلاءُand allegiance عَلَيكُمُis incumbent on you
وَماand not كُنتُwas I فَقعاًa truffle أَنبَتَتهُbrought it forth القَراقِرُthe level plains
I have their support, and your allegiance is owed to me;
I was no truffle grown by the level plains.
وَأَنتَand you فَقيرٌin need لَمnot تُبَدَّلbeen given in exchange خَليفَةًa substitute
سِوايَother than me وَلَمand not يَلحَقhave come of age بَنوكَyour sons الأَصاغِرُthe younger ones
And you are in need, with no substitute granted you
but me, while your younger sons have not yet grown.
فَقُلتُso I said اِزدَجِرtake warning from أَحناءَthe courses of طَيرِكَyour birds وَاِعلَمَنand know for certain
بِأَنَّكَthat you إِنif قَدَّمتَput forward رِجلَكَyour foot عاثِرُwill stumble
So I said: take warning from your birds' courses, and know for certain
that if you put your foot forward, you will stumble.
وَإِنَّand indeed هَوانَthe humiliation of الجارِthe neighbor لِلجارِto the neighbor مُؤلِمٌpainful
وَفاقِرَةٌand a crushing calamity تَأويflock إِلَيهاto it الفَواقِرُcalamities
And a neighbor's humiliation is painful to his neighbor,
a crushing calamity to which other calamities flock.
فَأَصبَحتَso you have become أَنّىhowever تَأتِهاyou approach it تَبتَئِسyou suffer بِهاbecause of it
كِلاboth مَركَبَيهاits two riding-places تَحتَbeneath رِجلَيكَyour feet شاجِرُunruly
So now, however you approach it, you suffer from it;
both its riding-places are unruly beneath your feet.
فَإِنso if تَتَقَدَّمyou advance تَغشَyou encounter مِنهاof it مُقَدَّماًa forepart
عَظيماًformidable وَإِنand if أَخَّرتَyou fall back فَالكِفلُthen the hindquarters فاجِرُare treacherous
If you advance, you encounter a forepart
formidable; and if you fall back, its hindquarters are treacherous.
وَماand whatever يَكُmay be مِنof شَيءٍanything فَقَدindeed رُعتَyou were terrified رَوعَةًa fright
أَباO father of مالِكٍMalik تَبيَضُّturn white مِنهاfrom it الغَدائِرُthe braids
Whatever may happen, you have suffered a fright,
Abu Malik, from which braided locks turn white.
فَلَوfor if كانَwere مَولايَmy ally اِمرَأًa man ذاpossessing حَفيظَةٍzeal for honor
إِذاًthen زَفَّwould hurry راعيthe shepherd of البَهمِthe lambs and kids وَالبَهمُwhile the lambs and kids نافِرُare fleeing
For had my ally been a man who guarded his honor,
the shepherd of the young flock would have hurried off, the flock scattering.
فَلاso do not تَبغِيَنّيseek me إِنif أَخَذتَyou seize وَسيقَةًa driven-off herd
مِنَon الأَرضِthe earth إِلّاexcept حَيثُwhere تُبغىare sought الجَعافِرُthe Jaʿafirs
So, if you seize a herd, do not seek me
anywhere on earth but where the Jaʿafirs are sought.
أولَئِكَthose men أَدنىcloser ليto me وَلاءًin allegiance وَنَصرُهُمand their aid
قَريبٌnear إِذاwhen ماindeed صَدَّturn away عَنّيfrom me المَعاشِرُthe clans
Those are closest to me in allegiance, and their aid
is near when the clans turn away from me.
مَتىwhenever تَعدُrace أَفراسيmy horses وَراءَafter وَسيقَتيmy driven-off herd
يَصِرit will reach مَعقِلَthe refuge of الحَقِّright الَّذيto which هُوَit صائِرُis bound to go
Whenever my horses race after my driven-off herd,
it reaches the refuge of right to which it is bound.
فَجَمَّعتُهاso I gathered them بَعدَafter الشَتاتِthe scattering فَأَصبَحَتand so they became
لَدىin the keeping of اِبنِIbn أَسيدٍAsid مُؤنِقاتٌsplendid خَناجِرُmassive camels
So I gathered them after their scattering, and they came to be
in Ibn Asid's keeping—splendid, massive camels.
