رَأَيتَyou saw اِبنَO son of بَدرٍBadr ذُلَّhumiliation of قَومِكَyour people فَاِعتَرِفso admit it
غَداةَon the morning رَمىshot جَحشٌJahsh بِأَفوَقَwith a broken-nocked arrow مالِكاMalik
You saw, O son of Badr, your people’s humiliation—admit it—
You saw, son of Badr, your people's humiliation—admit it.
on the morning when Jaḥsh shot Mālik with a broken-notched arrow:
On the morning Jahsh shot Malik with a broken-nocked arrow—
بِخَيرِكُمُat the best of you نَفساًin his own person وَخَيرُكُمُand the best of you أَباًin respect of his father
أَعَزُّهُمُthe dearest among them حَيّاًalive عَلَيهِمto them وَهالِكاand dead
the best of you in character, and the best of you in lineage,
The best of you in his own person, and the best of you in his father,
the dearest of them to his people, alive or dead.
The dearest to them, in life and in death.
تَذَكَّرتَyou recalled مِنهُfrom him حاجَةًa matter قَدalready نَسَيتَهاyou had forgotten it
وَبِالرَدهِand at al-Radh مِنهُfrom him حاجَةٌa matter مِنfrom وَرائِكاbehind you
Through him you remembered a need you had forgotten,
You recalled a matter concerning him that you had forgotten;
and at al-Radh, because of him, another need still awaits you.
And at al-Radh, another matter concerning him remains behind you.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou were قَدalready سَوَّقتَyou drove along مِعزىgoats حَبَلَّقاًsmall and short-legged
أَباO father of مالِكٍMalik فَاِنعِقthen call out إِلَيكَtoward you بِشائِكاto your sheep
So if you have driven along a scrawny flock of goats,
So if you have driven small, short-legged goats,
O Abū Mālik, then cry out and call your sheep to you.
O Abu Malik, then call your sheep to you.
أَباO father of مالِكٍMalik إِنif كُنتَyou are بِالسَيرِwith the march مُعجَباًimpressed
فَدونَكَthen go ahead فَاِنظُرthen look فيinto عُيونِthe eyes of نِسائِكاyour women
O Abū Mālik, if you pride yourself on the march,
O Abu Malik, if you are proud of your march,
then go—look into your women’s eyes.
Then go ahead—look into your women's eyes.
أَباO father of مالِكٍMalik إِنّيindeed I لِحُكمِكَtoward your judgment فارِكٌloathing
وَزَبّانُand Zabban قَدalready أَمسىhas become لِحُكمِكَtoward your judgment فارِكاloathing
O Abū Mālik, I loathe your judgment,
O Abu Malik, I indeed loathe your judgment,
yet you claimed that he had come to loathe your judgment.
And Zabban has already come to loathe your judgment.
هُمُthey حَيَّةُthe serpent of الواديthe valley فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are راقِياًa snake-charmer
فَدونَكَthen go ahead أَدرِكrecover ماwhat اِزدَهواthey carried off مِنfrom فَنائِكاyour courtyard
They are the valley’s two serpents; if you are an enchanter,
They are the valley's serpent; so if you are a snake-charmer,
then go—catch up with what they carried off from your encampment.
Then go ahead—recover what they carried off from your courtyard.
