قُضِيَwere settled الأُمورُthe affairs وَأُنجِزَand was fulfilled المَوعودُthe promise
وَاللَهُand God رَبّيmy Lord ماجِدٌglorious مَحمودُpraised
Affairs have been settled, and the promise fulfilled.
The matters have been decided and the promises fulfilled,
And God, my Lord, is glorious and praised.
And Allah, my Lord, is glorious and praiseworthy,
وَلَهُand His are الفَواضِلُthe bounties وَالنَوافِلُand the added gifts وَالعُلاand exalted glory
وَلَهُand His is أَثيثُabundant الخَيرِgoodness وَالمَعدودُand the counted good
His are the bounties, the added gifts, and exalted glory.
To Him belong the merits and the voluntary deeds and the highness,
And His is goodness in abundance and in counted measure.
And to Him belong the furniture of goodness and abundance,
وَلَقَدand indeed بَلَتexperienced إِرَمٌIram وَعادٌand ʿAd كَيدَهُHis stratagem
وَلَقَدand indeed بَلَتهُexperienced it بَعدَafter ذاكَthat ثَمودُThamud
And Iram and ʿAd indeed experienced His stratagem;
Indeed the people of Aram and Aad were ruined by their plots,
And Thamud indeed experienced it after that.
And the people of Thamud were ruined after that,
خَلّواthey left ثِيابَهُمُtheir garments عَلىover عَوراتِهِits exposed parts
فَهُمُso they بِأَفنِيَةِin the courtyards of البُيوتِthe houses هُمودُlifeless
They left their garments over its exposed parts,
They left their clothes over their defects,
So they lie lifeless in the courtyards of the houses.
So they became still in the courtyards of houses,
وَلَقَدand indeed سَئِمتُI grew weary مِنَof الحَياةِlife وَطولِهاand its length
وَسُؤالِand the asking هَذاthis الناسِpeople كَيفَhow is لَبيدُLabid
And I have indeed grown weary of life and its length,
And indeed I became weary of life and its length,
And of these people's asking, 'How is Labid?'
And the questioning of these people, "How is Labeed?"
وَغَنَيتُand I lived سَبتاًan age قَبلَbefore مُجرىthe running of داحِسٍDahis
لَوif كانَthere were لِلنَفسِfor the soul اللَجوجِstubborn خُلودُimmortality
And I lived an age before the running of Dahis,
And I sang the day before the path of Dahis,
If there were immortality for the stubborn soul.
If the obstinate soul had eternity,
وَشَهِدتُand I attended أَنجِيَةَthe confidential councils of الأَفاقَةِal-Afaqa عالِياًexalted
كَعبيmy heel (my standing) وَأَردافُand the deputies of المُلوكِthe kings شُهودُpresent as witnesses
And I attended the councils of al-Afaqa, exalted
And I witnessed the summit of glory high,
In standing, with the kings' deputies present.
Like the ankles of kings are witnesses.
وَأَبوكِand your father (to a woman) بُسرٌfresh; youthful لاnot يُفَنَّدُis deemed senile عَمرَهُthroughout his life
وَإِلىand to بِلىًdecay ماindeed (emphatic) يُرجَعَنَّwill surely be returned جَديدُa new thing
And your father is still fresh, not deemed senile in his lifetime;
And your father is Busr who has an age that cannot be refuted,
And every new thing shall surely be returned to decay.
And will not return to renewed youth.
غَلَبَovercame العَزاءَfortitude وَكُنتُand I was غَيرَnot مُغَلَّبٍdefeated
دَهرٌan age طَويلٌlong دائِمٌunceasing مَمدودُprolonged
My fortitude was overcome, though I had been undefeated,
I overcame grief though I was not overcome,
By a long, unceasing, drawn-out age.
A long, endless, extended lifetime.
يَومٌa day إِذاwhen يَأتيcomes عَلَيَّupon me وَلَيلَةٌand a night
وَكِلاهُماand both of them بَعدَafter المَضاءِpassing يَعودُreturn
A day, when it comes upon me, and a night—
A day that will come upon me and a night,
And both return after passing away.
And both of them after passing will return.
وَأَراهُand I see it يَأتيcoming مِثلَlike يَومِthe day لَقيتُهُI met it
لَمhas not يَنصَرِمcome to an end وَضَعُفتُand I weakened وَهوَand it شَديدُstrong
And I see it coming as on the day I encountered it:
And I see it coming like the day I met it,
It has not ended; I have weakened, while it remains strong.
It did not pass and I weakened while it was strong,
وَحَمَيتُand I defended قَوميmy people إِذwhen دَعَتنيcalled me عامِرٌʿAmir
وَتَقَدَّمَتand advanced يَومَon the day of الغَبيطِal-Ghabit وُفودُdelegations
And I defended my people when ʿAmir called me,
And I protected my people when Aamir called me
And delegations advanced on the day of al-Ghabit.
And the delegations advanced on the day of victory.
وَتَداكَأَتand pressed together أَركانُthe pillars of كُلِّevery قَبيلَةٍtribe
وَفَوارِسُand the horsemen of المَلِكِthe king الهُمامِvaliant تَذودُdrive back
And the pillars of every tribe pressed together,
And the pillars of every tribe wavered,
While the valiant king's horsemen drove them back.
And the brave horsemen of the honorable king repelled.
أَكرَمتُI honored عِرضيmy honor أَنto يُنالَbe assailed بِنَجوَةٍon safe high ground
إِنَّindeed البَريءَthe one free مِنَof الهَناتِfailings سَعيدُfortunate
I kept my honor beyond assault, on safe high ground;
I honored my dignity so that it would not be harmed by cowardice,
Indeed, one free of failings is fortunate.
Indeed the innocent one free of disgrace is fortunate.
ماnot إِنindeed (emphatic) أَهابُI fear إِذاwhen السُرادِقُthe pavilion غَمَّهُengulfed it
قَرعُthe clatter of القِسيِّthe bows وَأُرعِشَand was made to tremble الرِعديدُthe coward
I have no fear when the pavilion is engulfed
No sooner do I become downcast than
By the clatter of bows, and the coward is made to tremble.
The striking of the strong and the trembling of thunder cheer me up.
