ماnothing عاتَبَreproached الحُرَّthe free man الكَريمَthe noble كَنَفسِهِlike his own self
ما عاتَبَ الحُرَّ الكَريمَ كَنَفسِهِ
وَالمَرءُand a man يُصلِحُهُimproves him الجَليسُthe companion الصالِحُthe virtuous
وَالمَرءُ يُصلِحُهُ الجَليسُ الصالِحُ
Nothing reproaches the noble freeman like his own soul,
Nothing reproaches a free, noble man like his own self.
And a man is set right by a righteous companion.
And a virtuous companion improves a man.
