لَعَمريby my life لَئِنif indeed كانَwas المُخَبِّرُthe bearer of news صادِقاًtruthful
لَعَمري لَئِن كانَ المُخَبِّرُ صادِقاً
لَقَدindeed رُزِئَتwas bereaved فيin سالِفِbygone الدَهرِtime جَعفَرُJaʿfar
لَقَد رُزِئَت في سالِفِ الدَهرِ جَعفَرُ
By my life, if the bearer of news is truthful,
By my life! If the informer spoke truthfully,
Jaʿfar was indeed bereaved in days gone by
Ja'far was certainly maligned in days gone by.
فَتىًa young man كانَwas أَمّاas for كُلَّevery شَيءٍthing سَأَلتَهُyou asked him for
فَتىً كانَ أَمّا كُلَّ شَيءٍ سَأَلتَهُ
فَيُعطيthen he gives وَأَمّاand as for كُلَّevery ذَنبٍoffense فَيَغفِرُthen he forgives
فَيُعطي وَأَمّا كُلَّ ذَنبٍ فَيَغفِرُ
of a young man who, whatever you asked him for,
He was a man who, when asked, gave everything,
would give it; and whatever the offense, would forgive it.
And who forgave every sin.
فَإِنand if يَكُthere is نَوءٌa rainstorm مِنfrom سَحابٍa cloud أَصابَهُstruck him
فَإِن يَكُ نَوءٌ مِن سَحابٍ أَصابَهُ
فَقَدthen indeed كانَhe was يَعلوgains the upper hand فيin اللِقاءِbattle وَيَظفَرُand triumphs
فَقَد كانَ يَعلو في اللِقاءِ وَيَظفَرُ
And if a rainstorm from a cloud has struck him,
If he has been struck by a torrent of misfortune,
he indeed used to gain the upper hand in battle and triumph.
He used to rise high in battle and be victorious.
