فيin مَأتَمٍa mourning gathering مُهَجِّرِdeparting at midday الرَواحِdeparture
Rise, you two, and wail with the mourners,
People wandering with plaintive laments
At a mourning gathering that departs at midday.
In a funeral grieving departed souls
يَخمِشنَthey scratch حُرَّthe fair part of أَوجُهٍfaces صِحاحِunblemished
فيin السُلُبِmourning robes السودِblack وَفيand in الأَمساحِhaircloth garments
They claw the fair cheeks of unblemished faces,
They scratch burning faces in acts of despair
In black mourning robes and in haircloth.
In black garb and in deep sorrows
وَأَبِّناand eulogize, you two مُلاعِبَthe player with الرِماحِspears
أَباAbu (father of) بَراءٍBara مِدرَهَchampion in الشِياحِcombat
And eulogize the Player with Spears,
And our father, player with spears
Abu Bara, the champion in combat.
The noble Bara', whom the winds blew
ياO عامِراAmir ياO عامِرَAmir الصَباحِthe dawn

O Amir, O Amir of the dawn,
O Amir, O Amir of the morn
And champion of the mighty battalion!
And player with the cavalry of heavy infantry
وَفِتيَةٍand young men كَالرَسَلِlike the camel herd القِماحِwith heads held high

And young men like a camel herd with heads held high—
And youths like fast messengers
You visited them early with robes and wine,
You blessed them with fine garments and rest
وَزَعفَرانٍand saffron كَدَمِlike the blood of الأَذباحِslaughtered animals

And saffron like the blood of slaughtered beasts,
And with saffron the color of sacrificial blood
And a singing girl and a resonant lute.
And smoothness and ever-flowering splendor

If any living man could attain immortality,
If only a living awareness of success
The Player with Spears would have attained it.
Had known the player with spears

He was succor to the penniless seeker of aid,
It would have been savior of the struggling sufferer
And a refuge in grim times,
And protection in the corrupt time

When the north wind blows.
When the hot winds blow
A cup of venom and fatal throat-disease
A cup of disasters and slaughter

Left him to his allotted fate,
You left it to inevitable fate
Felled upon the hard, level plain.
