What troubled you this morning about the ruins,
What reminds you of the ruins early in the morning,
their dwelling-place effaced for years?
Of dwellings whose traces time has effaced?

غَيرَexcept رَسمٍa trace كَعُصبَةِlike a cluster of الأَغيالِthickets
Nothing is visible of the camp and its landmarks
The region has become desolate and unfamiliar,
except a trace like a cluster of thickets.
With no landmarks, like the dens of foreign tribes.

The eye sees no living soul around them,
My eyes see nothing around but solitude.
near them, except crouching ostrich chicks.
No voice stirs except the howl of wolves.
ياO خَليليmy friend الغَداةَthis morning إِنَّindeed دُموعيmy tears

My friend, this morning my tears
At daybreak, my tears, O friend,
streamed down before the eye could flash a glance.
Preceded the stirring of my lids.
قُمrise تَأَمَّلlook carefully وَأَنتَand you are أَبصَرُmore sharp-sighted مِنّيthan I

Rise and look closely—you see more keenly than I.
Rise and look, for your sight is keener than mine.
Do you see any camels at al-Ghamim,
Can you see any beauty behind the clouds?

fulfilling a desire through a halt,
Judges riding she-camels from Muna,
and circling and standing among the mountains?
Circling the Kaaba and pausing on hillsides,

They were made out for me on Faydah's stony ridge, urged onward,
Bearing, like Jews, trimmed scrolls of the Torah,
like a Jew from Natah of the tall palms.
Tied up in bundles ready for sale.

They rested at noon in ʿUsfan, then sped away in the afternoon,
They headed for Usfan, then left in haste
ascending at evening from Ghazal.
At night like gazelles wary of hunters.

Skirting al-Kadid, they traversed
They crossed the valley, heavily burdened,
the whole valley of al-Juhuf with their loads,
Each wadi filled with their packs.
قَصدَtoward لَفتٍLaft وَهُنَّwhile they مُتَّسِقاتٌare in ordered ranks

toward Laft, moving in ordered ranks,
Keeping close order, they headed straight on,
like Adulian ships, their rear ranks following close.
Like couriers not stopping to rest.

When they kept Dawwah on their right,
When the camel-litter was slanted to the right
and Surayr al-Budayʿ on their left,
And the couch borne to the left,
جُزنَthey crossed واديthe valley of المِياهِal-Miyah مُحتَضِراتٍracing

they crossed Wadi al-Miyah, racing along
They descended the winding valley cautiously,
al-ʿArj's track, threading the gaps.
Following its curves with care.

Al-ʿUbaylaʾ lay to their left,
Ubayla was on their left flank
and they left al-ʿAqiq on the side of al-Nisal,
While Aqiq marched with drawn swords.
Amlal
ascending al-Ghamis from ʿAbbud,
They passed Ghamees after crossing Abbud
taking al-Khawiyy from Amlal.
And traversed Khoyi after crossing Amlal.

And they folded up both flanks of Kutanah completely,
They skirted Qatanah from both sides
then al-Hima's south, then Dhat al-Nidal.
And traveled south of Hima and Nidal.
فَسَقىso may water اللَهُGod مُنتَوىthe chosen dwelling of أُمِّUmm عَمرٍوʿAmr

May God water Umm ʿAmr's chosen dwelling,
May God water the resting place of Umm ‘Amr,
where the fronts of the saddles headed.
Where the camel-litters came to a halt.
تَسمَعُyou hear الرَعدَthe thunder فيin المَخيلَةِthe rain-promising cloud مِنهاfrom it
مِثلَlike هَزمِthe bellowing of القُرومِthe mature camel bulls فيamong الأَشوالِthe dry she-camels
You hear thunder in its rain-promising cloud,
You can hear thunder in the clouds above
like the bellowing of camel bulls among dry she-camels.
Like the clash of arms amid war-cries.
وَتَرىand you see البَرقَthe lightning عارِضاًstretching across مُستَطيراًspreading far

And you see lightning stretching across and spreading far,
Lightning flashes and flickers brightly,
like piebald horses prancing and wheeling in their trappings,
Dazzling like the sparks from striking flint.

or a monk's lamps upon a height,
Or like the lanterns of a monk in a cell,
which he feeds richly with oil, their wicks blazing.
Their wicks soaked in fragrant oil.
حَبَّذاhow lovely هُنَّthey مِنamong لُبانَةِthe desire of قَلبيmy heart
وَجَديدُand the freshness of الشَبابِyouth مِنof سِرباليmy garment
How dear they are among my heart's desires,
How I love those maidens of Labanah
and youth's freshness, the garment I wore!
And the freshness of youth in new attire!
رُبَّmany a يَومٍday أَتَيتُهُنَّI attained them جَميعاًall together

Many a day I attained them all
Many a day I visited them all
beside a fair, tender, languid woman.
At Bayda’s, dressed at ease.
غَيرَexcept أَنّيthat I اِمرِؤٌa man تَعَمَّمتُhave turbaned myself حِلماًwith forbearance

Yet I am a man who wears forbearance as his turban;
But I am a man who has donned forbearance,
men like me abhor folly and youthful passion.
Detesting ignorance and wild youth.
وَيُلامُand is blamed الحَليمُthe forbearing man إِنif هُوَhe يَوماًone day

And a forbearing man is blamed if, one day, he
And the forbearing are blamed if someday
returns to folly after the back of his head has grayed.
They revert to ignorance after grey hairs.
