Visit ʿAzza, for the caravan is setting out,

Even if she has kept away from you and no bewilderment has befallen her.

She stood in view before us, her eye serene,

As though its pupil were drowning in deep water.

Then it circled around the edges of her eye,

Hastening before the eye's furtive glances, racing ahead.

As though, when both inner eye corners surged with it,

It were pearls in a row, loosened from their threads.

And perfume leaves a clinging trace upon her temples,

Like leeches along the sides of her eye socket.

She grants only a scant little, apprehensively,

As a frightened person dreads the serpent's hiss.

The camp grew fragrant as she passed with their women in litters—

Layla—and the fragrant ambergris betrayed her presence.
