She cranes her neck at the owl's voice whenever it calls,
Longing for the echo's voice whenever it calls
as does a long-necked one whose mate is away.
Yearning for the beautiful, bejeweled one's departure

She races long, lean, nobly bred she-camels, as though they were
Rivaling the twittering of birds as though it were
split bow-staves of bent, pliant boughs.
Strands interlaced of cane stalks accompanied

When we push her to her utmost, she stretches into full stride,
When we reach the limit of endurance she writhes
slack-reined, like a gate left loose.
A loose rein like an open door left ajar

The grip of night travel wore her down, night after night,
The clinging of pitch darkness harmed her every night
toward you, then my swift riding each blazing forenoon.
To you, so my mourning is daybreak, each dawnlit
حَلِيمٌforbearing إَذاwhen ماever (emphatic) نالَhe gains power عاقَبَhe punishes مُجمِلاًwith restraint

Forbearing, when he gains power, he punishes with restraint,
Clement, when he punishes, exacting yet forgiving
even in the severest punishment—or pardons without reproach.
The harshest punishment, or pardoning, never blaming
فَعَفوًاso grant pardon أَميرَCommander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful وَحِسبَةًand seeking divine reward
فَماfor whatever تَتَسِبyou seek reward for مِنof صالِحٍgood لَكَfor you يُكتَبِis recorded
So pardon, Commander of the Faithful, seeking divine reward;
So pardon, Commander of the Faithful, and be satisfied
for whatever good you seek reward for is recorded for you.
No good you do but is recorded and prescribed
أَساؤُواthey did wrong فإنso if تغفرyou forgive فِإِنَّكَfor you indeed أَهلُهُworthy of it

They did wrong; if you forgive, forgiveness befits you.
They did evil, but if you forgive, you are worthy of it
And the forbearance greatest in reward is that of one provoked.
The greatest clemency is the clemency of one provoked

Quraysh expelled them from Mecca's gravelly valleys
Quraysh denied them the valley grounds of Mecca
and Dhu Yaman, with the grooved Mashrafi sword.
And the Yemeni the overlooks terraced and leveled
