طَرِبَthrilled الفُؤادُthe heart فَهاجَso stirred ليfor me دَدَنيmy merriment
لَمّاwhen حَدَونَthey urged onward with song ثَوانِيَthe trailing ranks of الظُعنِthe camel litters
My heart thrilled, and my merriment awoke,
My heart was disturbed, so it raged against me
when they urged the trailing camel litters onward with song.
When the cheek's beauty aimed its arrows at me.
وَالعيسُand the pale camels أَنّىhow هِيthey (the camels) تُوَجِّهُهُthey direct it
شَأَماًtoward Syria وَهُنَّwhile they سَواكِنُdwellers in اليَمَنِYemen
And the pale camels—how can they turn it
And where might the fawn head to
toward Syria, while they dwell in Yemen?
Except to Yemen's most verdant valleys?
ثُمَّthen اِندَفَعنَthey surged onward بِبَطنِthrough the valley of ذيDhū عُبَبٍʿUbab
وَنَكَأنَand they reopened قَرحَthe wound of فُؤاديmy heart الضَمِنِailing
Then they surged through the valley of Dhū ʿUbab,
Then it struck with a sand-grouse's belly
and reopened the wound of my ailing heart.
And tore open the wounds deep in my heart.
